The night NEPA took light in our compound, nobody complained. That alone was strange. Usually, someone would shout, generator would roar, children would cry. But that night… silence. Thick, heavy silence like something was sitting on everyone’s chest. I was lying on my bed, scrolling my phone, when I heard it. Knock. Soft. Gentle. Like someone who didn’t want to be noticed. I sat up. “Who’s there?” I asked. No answer. Another knock. This time from my window. My heart started beating fast. My room was on the first floor. Nobody could just knock on my window. I slowly stood up and moved closer. The curtain was drawn. I could see a faint shadow behind it… like a person standing too close. “Who is it?” I whispered. Then the voice came. “Na me… your mama.” My body froze. My mother died two years ago. I didn’t reply. I couldn’t. The voice came again, a little louder this time, slightly… wrong. “Open… I dey outside.” I stepped back immediately. My throat went dry. “No,” I said, shaking. “You’re not my mother.” Silence. Then suddenly, BANG! The window shook violently, like something slammed into it. “OPEN THE WINDOW!” This time, the voice was no longer my mother’s. It was deeper, rough… angry. I ran to my door and flung it open. The corridor was dark, but I could hear footsteps downstairs. My dad was awake. “Daddy!” I shouted. He didn’t answer. Instead, I heard his voice… from outside my window. “Son… open for me.” Tears filled my eyes instantly. That thing… it was changing voices. Trying to trick me. I rushed back and pushed my wardrobe against the window. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely move. Then it started laughing. Low. Slow. Evil. “Everybody don sleep…” it whispered. “Na only you remain.” At that moment, the power suddenly came back. The light filled my room. And the knocking stopped. I stood there for minutes, too scared to move. Finally, I gathered courage and slowly pulled the curtain aside. Nothing. No one. Just the quiet compound. The next morning, I told my dad everything. He listened quietly, then asked one question: “Last night… you hear anybody call you from outside?” I nodded. His face went pale. He sighed and said: “In this compound… if something calls your name at night…” He looked me straight in the eyes. “…no answer am. Because if you do…” He paused. “…it will enter.”

Tired eyes. Black wrapper. The look of someone grief had moved into permanently. Before I could speak she grabbed my hand. "You saw him," she said. Not a question. "Yes," I said. She pulled me inside. "He said someone would come," she said. "He said the person who looked away would be the one to find me." "He said to give them this." She handed me an envelope. My name on the front. My full name. Written in handwriting I had never seen before. I opened it. One line inside. “You looked away once. You don't have to keep doing it” ~Anonymous~

I have the same dream every night. Not similar. The same. Same road. Same rain. Same yellow danfo with a cracked windscreen. I am always standing at the bus stop watching it pass. It never stops for me. I have had this dream for two years. Then last week I was running late for a meeting. It was raining. I flagged down the first bus I saw. It stopped. I got in. Sat down. Looked up. Cracked windscreen. I felt the blood leave my face. I looked around at the other passengers. They were all staring at me. Not the way passengers stare.

He smelled like rain and something else He said: You have been dead for two years. You just didn't know which bus to take. He pointed out the window. The city outside was the same. But wrong in ways I cannot explain. Like a copy made by someone who had only heard Lagos described. Never seen it. The driver started moving. I wanted to scream. But the mouth I tried to open was not mine anymore. Nothing was.

Three years ago I told my family I had a degree. I don't. I spent the money. Failed out first year. Was too ashamed to say anything. So I lied. Got a job anyway. Worked hard. Nobody ever checked. Life moved on. Then six months ago a letter came to my house. From the university. Congratulating me on my 5 years alumni membership. I never gave them my address. I never registered as alumni. I have moved three times since I left. Nobody has this address. I threw the letter away.

@Morris_Monye Come to Kano if you can and go round the 8 local government within the state capital and see for yourself. Because i don’t think you will have the time to visit the remaining 38.

@The_Fisher_ @Morris_Monye I've lived in Lagos, now I'm living in Kano. I totally agree with you. Sabon gari, fagge, brigade, badawa, hotoro, will match Lagos population, let's just add Mariri going to wudil axis.

@Morris_Monye I have lived in both cities and I can assure you that Kano has more population. Recently I worked In an LGA In Kano, one settlement in the LGA had only 5 houses, when I counted the number of children in those 5 household put together they were over 80, just children.

Am I the only one who I hates when people do this? : They go to Facebook, copy someone else’s real-life story verbatim (sometimes a very long one), paste it on X like it happened to them, then drop a tiny “Copied” or “© Mr Owonikoko” at the bottom. Bro, you just made me read 12 paragraphs thinking it was your personal ordeal, only for me to discover at the end that you’re just farming engagement with another person’s pain? That's an Instant soft block. Or am I just overreacting?

@NostalgicVibeNG I hate it and some of them even reply to comments like it's truly their experience. You hardly find true stories on Twitter again.

A woman filed for divorce from her husband. The judge asked her to state her reason. She said her husband was manipulative and controlling. She was asked to explain how. She said when he comes home from work and dinner is not ready, he gets angry. When he comes home and the house is not clean, he gets angry. The judge asked if she works outside the home. She said no. She is a FULL-TIME HOUSEWIFE The judge then asked a simple question So why is dinner not ready, and the house not in order, to welcome a man who has been out doing his own part for the household? Her answer? “I am taking care of two children.” Dear men, If you ever find yourself in this situation, and you have truly tried to make it work… 🚫Stop begging for what you deserve in your own home. I recommend you find yourself a female bestie... Bestie that enjoys cooking... After work Please go and eat where food is ready. So that you stop controlling and manipulating madam in the house. Marriage comes with responsibilities If a woman finds the basic duties of her chosen role unbearable, And she also finds this recommended peaceful resolution uncomfortable... She can leave, So that another woman who understands that marriage comes with responsibilities not just comfort can take her place. #conversationsthatmatter #relationship #marriage

Woekilemo" is a classic Ijaw gospel song by Asu Ekiye, originally released in 2001 on his album "Back to Base". It was an absolute gospel anthem in the early 2000s Sunday mornings after church service felt incomplete without this song playing on AIT Were you there?
