I visited Manchester Prison recently and was really concerned by what I saw - a clear example of the problems we inherited. I have been in regular contact with Charlie Taylor (Chief Inspector @HMIPrisonsnews) to discuss his findings, especially on drones. I will work with him and others to grip these issues. It was great to visit @theCOOKkitchen yesterday to announce our Employment Councils, which will bring probation, prisons, @DWPgovuk and businesses together to get more ex-offenders into work. Getting more prison leavers into jobs cuts crime and makes our streets safer.

What a day! A privilege, if a little surreal, to give my maiden speech in the House of Lords yesterday, with my family watching on. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way.

The maiden speech we’ve been waiting for. James Timpson is an inspired appointment. He pioneered the practice of hiring ex-offenders, chaired the Prison Reform Trust & founded an advisory board linking prisons with employers. Above all he truely cares Everyone should watch this

I’m proud to be handing over as Chair of the Employment Advisory Board network to Rosie Brown. When I started 4 years ago to help prison leavers find work, only 14% had a job after six months of release. We are now at over 30%, and 92 prisons have an EAB in place!
