It's out! Theory and whole genome observations suggest that imprinting can be caused by insertion of TEs near genes. Here we silence de novo insertions to test the hypothesis experimentally. And it worked! Beautiful work by @MeixiaZhao and her students, esp @TongLi1112

We are excited to publish this work in @PlantPhys: doi.org/10.1093/plphys… with @DamonLisch. We created two potentially novel imprinted genes using Mutator transposons. There are no things that transposons can't do!

Before I cut it open: what do you reckon - does this almost perfect 90 degree differential color indicate that there are only 4 carpels in this apple? Does the hypanthium even align with carpel symmetry? So many questions!

@ThePlantCell @MaizeZynskiHI @ASPB I never really appreciated this before. We’ve observed that H3K27me3 mediates transgenerational silencing of Mu, which we thought was a special case, but what’s special is the resetting, not the heritability.

Epialleles tend to associate with euchromatin, i.e. close to genic regions. However, epialleles associated with QTLs tend to be found in heterochromatin... And again, hypermethylated epialleles are more likely to associate with suppressive histone marks. nature.com/articles/s4146…
