@AmericaRecharge Neither Andy Burnham nor his wife had any financial shares in the company. His wife was a minor employee. He declared it and excused himself from the decision making. So he did not in fact, award his wife a £4 million contract.

One issue is that takes money. Young people doing normal jobs just aren’t paid enough. There is a disconnect between salary and opportunity in the UK

If we continue to use private care the way we do a study at the university of Oxford warned we would have lower clinical quality…

@Matt_1269501 @edmondo66 @SusanCowell I argue on fact. There are arguments very much for the NHS being able to function without private care. But I prefer the way European models integrate public and private heath care in a more balanced way. I do care about patient outcomes…1/

If it is an operation that was otherwise going to be carried out by the NHS, I don't see the issue. Instead of the surgery costing the NHS, it costs the patient themselves. So NHS save on the surgery alone. If the patient were expected to pay for everything, they'd likely not go private at all, restoring the full burden to taxpayers.

@Titch555 @edmondo66 @SusanCowell More fool the NHS for allowing it, however much of it has come under post 1997 governments deliberately. The PFI deals signed under Blair and Brown were virtually criminal in their reckless lack of due diligence and bankrupted several NHS trusts.

And why shouldn't patients be referred back to their GP for medication? It's the same meds they'd have needed regardless of who carried out surgery, but the NHS have saved money and resources of the procedure. The patient has paid their taxes, but you want an all or nothing opt out from NHS care?
