🏃 Brian Marelo was born with spina bifida and has become an expert at defying the odds. In 2025, Brian completed the @LCMCHealth Crescent City Classic 10K in 45:52, faster than 96% of participants. When Brian was born with his spinal cord growing out of his back, doctors said he would never walk. His initial diagnosis was grim—that Brian would lie in a bed and have no quality of life. The Marelos made it their mission to give their son the best life he could have, spending day after day in occupational therapy and dealing with the challenges that came with his diagnosis, including epilepsy and hydrocephalus requiring a shunt. With 20 operations under his belt, Brian has had “more surgeries than birthdays—and we never know when the next will be,” his mother said. They celebrated each of his milestones, and as he grew, he developed an interest in sports, playing baseball, soccer, and basketball with The Miracle League. He later joined the Lafayette-based Cajun Wheelers. In 2024, when he participated in a 5K fundraiser for the youth wheelchair basketball team, he discovered a need for speed, and he hasn’t stopped since. The new flagship unit at Manning Family Children’s will anchor Children's regional network of care and address a critical need for expanded capacity and advanced neonatal care as the only program in Louisiana and the Gulf South with every pediatric medical and surgical specialty under one roof. In 2025 alone, our team cared for 272 critically ill babies transferred from 39 hospitals across the region, including micropremies born as early as 22 weeks. As Louisiana faces one of the highest preterm birth rates in the nation, the need for highly specialized neonatal care continues to grow. Our state-of-the-art NICU will serve as a national model for neonatal care, often beginning before birth, due to the strength of the @LCMCHealth network of obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine specialists. As I'm writing this description, Western States is under 1 month away. Let's be real: my dreams of being on the podium at Western States amount to a moonshot. Episode 11 is the big leap before the moonshot: youtu.be/au5p977kWPY?si… It's a low-probability dream. I'm not delusional, even if we might find out the dream was delusional all along. But that's what big dreams are all about. Moonshots are worthwhile for their own sake. The Quad Rock 50 Mile is a classic Colorado trail race where many top runners have tested themselves on the beautiful trails outside Fort Collins. Given the history and tough terrain, it's the perfect race to test myself before Western States. I came out of the race with some new lessons and some stronger confidence... and also a small knee injury. We'll see what happens. But right now, the knee is feeling good. And the moon is looking a little bit larger in the sky. Moonshot time. BELIEVE.
