I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield. These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that. Many people here feel Westminster isn’t working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear. I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them. More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the £2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled people’s bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing people’s everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need. I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.

@King0243_PJC But that is not what he was saying in september (I think) when he was saying we should rejoin and he would like to see it in his lifetime. Say one thing now and another when (and if he ever) becomes the PM. Don't trust Labour.

Andy Burnham has just made one of the most grounded interventions of the campaign yet. “I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU. I respect the decision that was made at the referendum,” he said. No pandering, no culture-war posturing, just a clear, pragmatic line that respects the public’s vote while focusing on what actually matters to people. That kind of straight-talking realism could give Reform UK a very tough time in this election.

@AndyBurnhamFC The signs were made and distributed and taken down at what cost. Even if they were repurposed they still cost a lot of money and time.

@lukejcr Labour had the seat for another three years at least before this farce unfolded. Stop taking the public for absolute mugs. Hopefully, the people of Makerfield will see that this is a Burnham/Simons stitch-up and vote for another party accordingly - preferably @TheGreenParty.

The people I met in Makerfield weren’t making an ideological statement. They were asking to be listened to. And they were, when given the chance, very willing to have that conversation. Nigel Farage is in for a fight here. This is a seat with Labour in its bones. 🌹

@lukejcr Yvonne Favergue held a large majority, Josh Simons halved that majority and Labour has just lost 18 council seats, 17 to Reform and 1 to an Independent. I think Burnham is the one who has the fight.

Andy Burnham would decisively beat Starmer in a head to head leadership contest. YouGov found that Burhnam would win 59% against 37% for Starmer. Andy is like beat Wes Streeting by 80% to 10%.

Burnham lived in the area for 25 years and has only ever contested one other seat. Clacton was Farage's 8th attempt at becoming an MP. You parachuted Matt Goodwin into G&D, even after he criticised an area which he has no history. But sure, let's talk personal ambition.
