World's Amazing Things
Did you know why migratory birds fly in a V-shape? The answer is absolutely amazing. This method allows the birds to cover the greatest possible distance by utilizing the combined airflow generated by the entire flock, thus minimizing the effort expended during flight. This means that when each bird flaps its wings, it generates energy that helps it soar, as well as the bird next to it. This enables the entire flock to cooperate in flight. Studies have shown that this flight formation enables the entire flock to cover a distance of 71% greater than if the bird flew alone. Not only that, but researchers have found that the birds alternate their positions in the flock in a wondrous way. When one bird feels tired, it moves back, allowing it to utilize the airflow generated by the entire flock, thus minimizing the effort expended. After a while, it returns to its position, making way for another bird to rest.

This is what a flying fish looks like up close. Flying fish can launch themselves out of the ocean and glide through the air for up to 200 meters using wing-like fins to escape predators, though escaping the water often means being chased by predatory birds instead.
