Here is the finished illustration after I digitally retouched Sera and Archon's face, redid Sera's hand, and added the oil stains, background details, and the border.

My 12-year-old son Judah created the initial sketches for all of the internal illustrations in The Deadline Saga. Here you can see a sketch for Book 2: The Expanse.

I've submitted everything to Amazon! The Deadline Saga Book 1: The Great Journey is coming out May 5, 2026. The book features illustrations by my 12-year-old son. The image of Mira Roth was the last completed the other day, while the other was the first done earlier this year.

WIP sketch of Ren Cael. Nailed the Japanese facial characteristics this time. Honestly, his twin sister Wren came out looking Caucasian, so I plan on fixing that in photoshop. 🤷

This book is a little different from my usual work. If you know me as Tom B. Free, you know I usually write illustrated children’s books. The Great Journey is my first YA fantasy adventure, with higher stakes, a bigger world, and a story written for older readers.

I've spent most of 2025 slowly writing this story while working on illustrating books for other authors. It's a much longer tale, about the length of the first two books combined! I'm still in the early phases of development, but I'm hoping to publish in 2026.
