A Russian registered Antonov AN124 - Volga Dnepr #VI5854 RA-82078 - arrived in Toronto from Anchorage early this morning. Sources tell me it will not be departing anytime soon due to Canadian airspace restrictions prohibiting Russian aircraft. An exemption needs to be requested.

@armygunner Yes! Perhaps I should have said aviation employees. Many get underserved grief for simply doing their jobs correctly.

So.. the worlds largest plane is apparently flying (after reports saying it has been destroyed) with the callsign “Fckputin” I am quite confused! Is this a glitch @flightradar24 ?

Two Russian Aeroflot flights are planned to fly over the eastern part of Canadian airspace. Exemptions are allowed, if granted, under the NOTAM. These are regularly scheduled commercial passenger flights. #SU111 #SU157

@txwikinger_ea I didn’t say they granted an exemption.I’m saying inferences could have been made and they understood it incorrectly. Could have been deliberate too. That’s why they’re investigating.

@JAnstey04 @txwikinger_ea Thanks for the insight. I’m not totally versed on the nuisances of granting permission or the actual policing of airspace. Either way I’m thinking Aeroflot just wanted to get home along with their passengers. Investigation will determine if it was deliberately circumvented.

@TomPodolec @txwikinger_ea (2/2) I would assume they’re IFR rated. I would imagine any Center controller being handed off an aircraft about to enter their airspace would assume they’re allowed to be there rather than ask questions about an exemption if they even knew they were Russian.

@txwikinger_ea Too early to tell where things failed. Exemption could be inferred if ATC granted #AF111 permission to continue through Canadian airspace. Investigation will determine what happened.
