Zia will be very effective. Very forthright and driven. Zero doubt on that score - it's his nature. My only concern is that it can render even the best performers vulnerable to overreach or process-laden attacks by the embedded establishment. What I hope Zia and Nigel recognise the need to balance that reforming zeal with a healthy dose of caution. You need one or two advisers and junior ministers who can provide that "look before you leap" counsel privately at times. Who can be the voice in the room saying wait until all the facts are fully established or the pieces we need are in place for success. It's not an easy thing to be the one providing that wisdom of caution - it doesn't endear you to others at times. But it is so necessary. People like Zia are essential to the governing mission of Reform UK. They will receive far more scrutiny and be subject to a lot more internal wrecking and set up attempts than most ministers. It's why it's so vital they are supported by people who can see around the corners of the Whitehall maze and spot the dangers and bad faith actors.

At 82 I'm a bit to old but I've volunteered to to leaflet for Reform.

🚨 This is a dark day for Britain. Reform receives a large, perfectly lawful donation from a British Citizen, and Labour responds by rushing through a new law to prohibit him from making such a donation again. Rycroft even refers to British citizens as “malign actors” in his report. This is how fast the machinery of government moves when it wants to protect itself. When it comes to securing our borders? Nothing can be done for years at all apparently. This Starmer regime is authoritarian. Cancelling elections, choking off legal funding for its main rival, surveilling speech. Make no mistake, if Reform do not win the next general election, this country is toast.
