Mount Doom is the intentionally literalist translation of Amon Amarth, its name in the practically *complete language* he included in the book. You could also translate as Mountain of Fate, as some translations of LOTR do.
However, "Duncan Idaho" is also fantastic naming.

If you wrote your book, you shouldn't worry much about being accused of AI use, because, unlike a plagiarizing grifter, you can reproduce your voice & likely have your revisions, etc. in your word processor/notebook. So let's stop abetting people who are selling what's not theirs

Jesus. Ai wrote this. This book was written in Ai. The horror. So what? Blasphemy. It’s all the authors losing their shit over other authors. Why eat your own? I left the trad book ecosystem as I thought indie authors would be better. The same thing was said about computers, photography and calculators. I will now avoid authors slamming ai. Haha

That’s why I like editing. It creates the urgency to ‘read this now.’ Maybe that’s why I’ve enjoyed every story I’ve worked with. Anyway, thanks 🙏

There is a lot of irony in putting AI writing through what is essentially AI to see if the original text is AI generated? How do we know the AI Checker isn’t friends with the AI author? Maybe they’re in cahoots!

If that's the case, that's a problem, too. I've put writing samples through AI checkers as well for them to come back saying my work was partially generated when I know for a fact it was not. These tools don't get it right 100% of the time. So I guess I'm just wondering where the definitive proof came from. Did they obtain evidence of her prompt conversations somehow? If so, how? Is there a tool that gets it right more so than other so-called AI checkers? If so, what is the tool, and how can I gain access to it for my own peace of mind while working with authors? I have so many questions lol

The answer is that the industry needs to invest in its editors. For years they’ve been cutting them back and giving them the workloads of five. Is it a surprise that AI can get published? You don’t need AI detector programs. You just need well read, happy editors.

re: the AI book being pulled at Hachette - though I agree we shouldn’t let AI ‘books’ be published, how are they making sure to be absolutely 100% certain it was indeed written with AI? Because if there isn’t a definitive system in place this could become very messy for authors

@portraitinflesh I think movie viewers all too often forget that there is no ring prologue in the book. When we begin chapter one with the long expected party, no one has any idea what the ring is or how it works. We can infer so much from the Bombadil chapters about the unseen world & the ring.

My personal take is that (a) Peter Jackson was 100% correct to leave Bombadil out of the films, but (b) in the context of the book, he's essential. The Lord of the Rings is not supposed to be a rollicking A-to-B-to-C adventure; it's building a whole world, with a rich hinterland.

This is what happens when people reduce storytelling to plot and lose the ability to actually read prose. The Tom Bombadil sequence is not only essential to the book's themes, it also contains some of Tolkien's most astonishingly beautiful writing.

Like the mad geniuses we are, Clayton Snyder and I have written a real-world horror novel. Unfortunately, we are fantasy authors.
