Mount Doom is the intentionally literalist translation of Amon Amarth, its name in the practically *complete language* he included in the book. You could also translate as Mountain of Fate, as some translations of LOTR do. However, "Duncan Idaho" is also fantastic naming.
advanced apathy@Tragedy_Andy

I love LotR but sorry I don't wanna hear fans of a book that has "Mount Doom" and "Grima Wormtongue" talk about the naming conventions behind Duncan Idaho

If you wrote your book, you shouldn't worry much about being accused of AI use, because, unlike a plagiarizing grifter, you can reproduce your voice & likely have your revisions, etc. in your word processor/notebook. So let's stop abetting people who are selling what's not theirs

@GreavesEc @Lyons_Pen Anyone who says photography is to painting like what ai is to writing knows nothing about lenses, knows nothing about light, knows nothing about focal point, knows nothing about exposure or black point or contrast, knows nothing about composition. They just don’t know what art IS

I’m a slow and distracted reader these days. (I haven’t finished your book yet, sorry. I’m still reading and enjoying it.) That’s why I like editing. It creates the urgency to ‘read this now.’ Maybe that’s why I’ve enjoyed every story I’ve worked with. Anyway, thanks 🙏

Embarrassed to say I've not heard of Kay Nielsen hitherto, but now I'm compelled to get his art book published by @TASCHEN. Such beautiful illustrations ! ( link in comments below )

@RealEricCSteele Draft history solves everything. The drug dog alerts, but you still got to open the thing up and check the contents. Passengers won’t open their bag even with money on the line? Guilty.

The answer is that the industry needs to invest in its editors. For years they’ve been cutting them back and giving them the workloads of five. Is it a surprise that AI can get published? You don’t need AI detector programs. You just need well read, happy editors.
Becki is Agented!!!@roo_richardson

re: the AI book being pulled at Hachette - though I agree we shouldn’t let AI ‘books’ be published, how are they making sure to be absolutely 100% certain it was indeed written with AI? Because if there isn’t a definitive system in place this could become very messy for authors

@portraitinflesh I think movie viewers all too often forget that there is no ring prologue in the book. When we begin chapter one with the long expected party, no one has any idea what the ring is or how it works. We can infer so much from the Bombadil chapters about the unseen world & the ring.

My personal take is that (a) Peter Jackson was 100% correct to leave Bombadil out of the films, but (b) in the context of the book, he's essential. The Lord of the Rings is not supposed to be a rollicking A-to-B-to-C adventure; it's building a whole world, with a rich hinterland.
Jonas Kyratzes@JonasKyratzes

This is what happens when people reduce storytelling to plot and lose the ability to actually read prose. The Tom Bombadil sequence is not only essential to the book's themes, it also contains some of Tolkien's most astonishingly beautiful writing.

@JoaoSilvaWrites @vinayvasan Same for me ✌️ I’ve seen incredible books that were a bit dense and heady get passed over for books that were f i n e but much more accessible and fun. It’s no surprise. As long as the right readers find us, we can play.

Sanderson: a satisfying ending requires a clear understanding of the magic system. Tolkien: the magic system is friendship.

@FletcherMR Release it so your fans can buy it and enjoy it, but also market it to real-world horror fans (all the promotional sites charge way less for horror) so they can find out how great you guys are and read through to the other stuff!

Like the mad geniuses we are, Clayton Snyder and I have written a real-world horror novel. Unfortunately, we are fantasy authors. And so the question: What the fuck do we do with this? Release it and enjoy the little BLOOP sound it makes as it sinks outa sight? Something else?
