@marcmaths @larrylemonmaths My question also. Surely if it's made nice and low stakes it's not at all. I do 8 questions at the beginning of all my foundation lessons, they are often the part I feel students are most engaged in. I make it clear they are low stakes.

@larrylemonmaths Why is it stressful?

Every Maths lesson now starts with 10 minutes of random questions, which is actually quite stressful for the kids. It should be you asking them questions and getting them to remember what you did last lesson, that you’re going to build on in today’s lesson.

We have a lot of historical records of exam papers like this. Frustratingly, we have far fewer records of what the students actually wrote in response! Maybe their responses were all brilliant. Maybe some of them were terrible. My colleagues wrote a paper on standards in A-level maths over time, and finding archive responses was really hard! Eventually they were able to compare responses from 1964, 1968, 1996 and 2012. Standards had declined dramatically between 1968 & 1996. PS crafting the figures is also really fun for most kids. Cutting, sticking, blue-tac... Should be able to play the whole game free. Especially if you can print a few colour pages at work ;-p

@Tom_does_maths @hb_history Teachers get paid for weekends. It is part of being on a wage. Teachers are always working on weekends. Pljs this feels like they are using alloted half days, which means it is during teachers paid time anyway.

🚨 A letter to Year 11 families at Michaela Community School states that children who do not attend weekend and holiday revision sessions will “spend time in Referral” They must also attend in full school uniform

@Tom_does_maths @hb_history It is weird to me when people look at something that is working and then go, well that wouldn't work for me. Not if you don't try it, no. Also none of this requires money from the school. Just a solid culture of excellence and high standards.

@Tom_does_maths @hb_history And if they don’t? You’ll be moaning next about disadvantaged children. At Michaela both parents and pupils know what to expect before they accept a place. I’m sure there are plenty of crappy schools to go to if you don’t like their ethos.

@LeeMcClymont @hb_history No but I think this is a reason, I would assume there may be more, why the Michaela school strategy isn't realistic to repeat everywhere.
