@dylanwiliam @teacherhead Wouldn't the proportion and complexity of material retained and time taken to teach mastery be related? The more you can retain the quicker you'll achieve mastery.

@marcmaths @teacherhead Bloom built on Carroll’s idea that aptitude be regarded not as the proportion and complexity of taught material retained but rather the amount of time taken to reach mastery. Give all students the same time to learn something and you’ll get a normal distribution of achievement.

Most teachers believe in inclusion but don’t actually teach inclusively.. and the room to improve core routines for systematic inclusion is huge.

@ShakinthatChalk But surely they have no knowledge. And need carefully designed clear explicit instruction until they get the knowledge.

And lots more besides. Humans have an innate ability to problem solve, strategise, make connections and meaning. This was developed over thousands of years and began way back in our evolution. Learning to read, write and work with number is already within us at birth.

If you’re an England fan born in 2000, you have no idea how good you have it. You turned 18 in 2018, and your entire adult life has just been watching England deep in tournaments. World Cup semis, Euros finals, quarter-finals... you missed decades of pure heartbreak

@cierzo1 @ShakinthatChalk It is not claimed that these ideas are new or innovative. They were codified from watching good teachers so those not as good at particular things could have some ideas on how to get better.

@cierzo1 @ShakinthatChalk You said "most good teachers". So, there are good teachers that don't do that and also not good teachers who don't. This is for them and for those training them. There are so many labels because they were published in the same book.

Warm strict has to be the most creepy phrase in education. A blatant attempt to soften the no excuses ideology. Just call it firm but compassionate, which any old salt in teaching just sees as, teaching.

@cierzo1 @ShakinthatChalk That's exactly right. I guess the difference is that I don't see anything wrong with that. It's an American term and it has gained some traction over here. The idea is more important than the term. And as you say it has always been a good idea.

@ShakinthatChalk @marcmaths Teachers were talking about being firm and fair long before “warm and strict” became the latest buzzword. Good teaching has always been about clear boundaries, consistency and fairness. It’s not a new idea, just a new label for something many teachers have been doing for years.
