Reparations. Is there any logic to these calls at all? Are former British colonies today poorer than they would be without colonisation? Did Britain somehow 'extract' their wealth? And to what extent is Britain to blame for global slavery? My analysis 👉tomharwood.substack.com/p/on-colonial-…

@tomhfh Jeez Tom, why do you keep pushing this crap? If someone you refer to as "we" happens to live in Northern Ireland then are you going to assert their identity is British?

Around the turn of the century politicians decided that Britain was no longer acceptable shorthand for the country we live in. Instead, they rebranded as ‘UK’. Ugly ‘UK’ branding was slapped everywhere. They diminished our identity and now we’re UKians, not British.

This is Seven Sisters Road in @haringeycouncil. It's an utter embarrassment that we have allowed our high streets to deteriorate to this point. This parade of shops could be a landmark destination, but instead it's neglected and forgotten. I'm all for liberalising planning BUT design codes have a place, and this is a great example. No satellite dishes, no PVC, no estate agent signs, no white paint. Just consistent signage, colours and high-quality heritage shopfronts. @createstreets

London’s brutalist Southbank Centre has been listed at Grade-II by @HistoricEngland. The centre is visited by ~3.4 million visitors a year. Modernist aficionados are cock-a-hoop. This, they claim, is evidence Britain now loves brutalism. My latest article in @TheCriticMag ...

Sometimes I think about how we could have had a London Sphere by now if our politicians weren’t all allergic to economic growth.

I profoundly disagree with Nicholas on his disdain for brutalism: but, as he makes quite clear in this fantastic piece, the public are sadly with him...

Has Robert Jenrick been looking to Canada when reading the tea leaves of Britain's political future. There are three ways in which he might have been emulating our loyal cousins across the Atlantic. Read my analysis here 👉tomharwood.substack.com/p/a-very-canad…

I don't think the advice is awful, but it is worth noting that the extent to which it is 'evidence-led' is overblown. The recommendations are based off a literature review where most of the studies are non-causal, cross-sectional, and heavily confounded. Honestly, we really don't know how bad (or not) screen time is for kids. The advice itself is informed by the review, but it is highly precautionary. At every point, they err on the side of caution. In my view, when the Govt puts out advice they should be careful to communicate when we're dealing with a precautionary best-guess, and when we're dealing with 'vaccines stop this virus/smoking causes cancer' tier information.

This government is on the side of families. Whether that is tackling the cost of living, or helping navigate the rapidly changing online world. Today, we publish non-judgemental, practical tips, developed with parents, experts and led by evidence to manage under-5s’ screen time.

@tomhfh Let’s be serious, the media never gave this government a chance, they had already turned to Reform by July 5th.

@tomhfh Yes but Tom, you're trying to apply logic to a situation that is really about grifters trying to exploit people who have been brainwormed into compliance.

"For all the riches of global dominance, Britain at the height of its imperial power in 1913 was per person poorer than Ghana (with all its demands for reparations) is today. Per person, today’s Nigeria is 55% richer than Britain was then." tomharwood.substack.com/p/on-colonial-…
