And this healthier headwater ecosystem provides the foundations for recovering wildlife across the Dee. When we surveyed the river in 2021 we found just 2 salmon parr. When we surveyed again in 2024 we found 54! Step by step we can restore the Dee ecosystem.

For the first time in 10 years… we’ve got Lake Oku frog tadpoles. 🐸 @zsllondonzoo keeper Unnar Aevarsson shares this milestone for the Lake Oku frog, a Critically Endangered @EDGEofExistence species found in just one crater lake in Cameroon. After a small group was brought to us in 2008, we’ve been working to understand how to care for and breed them ever since. Moments like this help us go further, building the knowledge we need to refine breeding techniques, mimicking the specific water chemistry and temperature of Lake Oku, and strengthening the long-term conservation of this remarkable species. #ZSL #Conservation

A quick stop at Eastham Country Park where the ponds we worked on have settled, and look more like ponds again, less like muddy puddles. Ducks already using the main pond, will be dispensing other pond life, and it held 60+ clumps of spawn. 🐸 #wirralarg #wirralwildlife #argsuk
