Ted Nasmith's depiction of the Argonath is the one I find most compelling. His fidelity to the source material is a great aid.
The Fellowship labor in their boats amidst the raging rapids as the stone statues loom up in front of them.
Tolkien describes their hands outstretched as shown, but there is also an indication of intimidation and silent power. Nasmith's wisp of clouds and shade accent the illumination of the statues, adding to their mystery.
The flying birds are a great touch as well.
