a lot of criticism of Intel is unwarranted. The narrative that a bunch of MBAs "financialized" the company is wrong. Really it was the opposite. The company took a big swing with lots of capex (becoming a foundry) and the margins have not turned around as fast as markets want. 🧵

@politicalmath I’m not sure anyone bothered to read far enough - the proposal is taxing unrealized cap gains on assets at your time of death. Right now assets get a basis reset with no cap gains taxes when they are passed down through inheritance.

The concept of unrealized capital losses is the most obvious rebuttal to a tax on unrealized gains You can't have one without the other, it would lead to complete fiscal insanity

@olsonforpdx You clearly don’t understand economics. Commercial owners don’t want their buildings vacant – vacancy is because there is no demand or other market issues. Vacancy tax just makes it worse. Oh, and don’t forget lower property values means less tax revenue for the city…

It's remarkable how the smartphone age made some Americans think that all technological progress = better consumer toys.

AI is mostly a B2B technology. No consumer wants a lathe or a drill press either. Companies make them because other companies use them. AI is a machine tool for the mind -- a productivity device rather than a consumer toy.

@ArmandDoma @Noahpinion Hopefully, we don’t have a lot of time to figure this out because as soon as population starts dropping, the economy starts declining, which means less money and fewer people to innovate. After a little while of this we don’t just stagnate, but actually start going backwards.

World population outside of Africa is projected to peak at mid-century. Humanity is getting about 1.5 to 2 billion more African folks this century, and then we're going to be in long-term decline -- unless we figure out some solution to low fertility rates.

You build more so everyone stops bidding up what’s already there

@rish_misra @Scott_Wiener @sfstandard @scott_weiner I’m not a builder, but I don’t know how you build low-cost housing in the most expensive city in the world.

We’ve worked hard to reform SF’s catastrophic approach to housing — an approach that’s caused explosive housing costs. The Board of Supervisors will vote on whether to back-slide by overriding the Mayor’s veto of an anti-housing proposal. My piece on why it shouldn’t override:

@chrsdcook @z_azn_guy Market rate developments won’t be affordable to them, but who’s going to move into the developments? Mostly young people moving out of rent controlled Victorians, which will then fall in rent, etc working the rent improvement through the whole housing stock.

@z_azn_guy Ok but you have to consider the context here. Thousands evicted and displaced and priced out, a real gutting of working-class and low-income SF. This includes many city workers, service industry, etc. We can't pretend that any market-rate developments will be affordable for them.

Another thing: Massive housing supply might reduce prices a bit over years. But even if it did by a huge amount, like say 20%, that's a $1M home selling for $800k--not at all affordable. By then the market rate supply will have priced out anyone who could afford that $800k.
