@teortaxesTex The longer this war goes on the longer the gulf’s recovery will take. They’re going to have to completely rethink their economic model after this because the image of Dubai as the Middle Eastern safe haven is dead.

@teortaxesTex It’s something i like to call the lower high income trap. The East Asian development model only gets you up to 25k-35k USD in GDP per capita, so far it has only been stagnation after that. It will be interesting to see how China tackles this problem in the coming decade

Premier Zhou Enlai raises one of the ten banners of the 'Boxer' (Yihetuan) Uprising, which had been seized by German forces during the Eight-Nation Alliance invasion of 1900. In 1955, Otto Grotewohl, Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic (left), returned it to China.

@GoatThatShitOn If they do it it’s going to be ugly, you bet we’re going to get videos of American soldiers being slimed by FPVs and the American public is not ready for that.

A new paper shows that neoliberal austerity policies implemented by the World Bank and the IMF in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s and 1990s were associated with a *20% decline in real incomes.* The destruction caused by these organisations across the Global South is staggering.

The ultimate goal of humanity should be to achieve a post scarcity world and then enjoy a materially stress free life larping as farmers, sailors, monks, deep thinkers, planetary explorers etc.

Yes, how would the US government react if leading lab wanted to relocate to China? Oh wait, there are laws that would prevent this....

The CCP’s response to the @ManusAI deal sends a clear message: there is no such thing as a truly “private” tech company in China. Even when firms seek to globalize or exit the Chinese market, the CCP retains leverage, through regulatory review, ownership structures, and direct intervention. As AI becomes a foundational technology, the United States must approach systems originating in China with clear-eyed scrutiny. wsj.com/tech/leaders-o…

This is what you get when developing countries prioritise tourism and services instead of trying to build a real tangible economy. I would even argue that developing countries should ban tourism until they reach a higher middle income status and eliminate absolute poverty.
