I am very concerned by the human rights defender Tommy Olsen being taken into custody in #Norway, pending his possible extradition to #Greece. I have known Tommy's work with Aegean Boat Report for years, & fear the charges he faces have been brought in direct retaliation for his work defending the rights of migrants, refugees & asylum seekers. His prosecution appears to form part of the long-standing & well documented repression of people doing such work in #Greece & at the EU's borders. The case against him should be dropped @NorwayInGeneva @GreeceInGeneva

«Any discourse that suggests a hierarchy of rights holders on the basis of their being more or less deserving is deeply problematic.»

We must preserve Europe's #HumanRights system; be evidence-based, rejecting false claims & dangerous associations of migration w. criminality. Uphold the law & the universality of rights. Respect for everyone's rights secures a safe state. It is not a zero-sum game. 👇#ECHR @coe coe.int/en/web/commiss…

Another shameful move by the European Commission to appease Morocco by labelling products from Western Sahara as "Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra” &“Dakhla-Oued Eddahab". This clearly goes against the CJEU's court order (see below) and will be struck down. wsrw.org/en/news/commis…

Another big point: "the labelling [of melons and tomatoes from Western Sahara] must indicate Western Sahara alone as the country of origin of those goods, to the exclusion of any reference to Morocco, so as to avoid misleading consumers as to the true origin of those goods"

#Strasbourg, 26 November 2025 By a margin of just one vote short of the required absolute majority, the draft resolution presented before the #EuropeanParliament failed to pass, and the objection to the Commission’s move to adopt the Moroccan thesis regarding the labeling of origin for agricultural products imported from the occupied #WesternSahara 🇪🇭 under the most recent agreement signed between the #EuropeanUnion 🇪🇺 and #Morocco 🇲🇦, was not upheld. 1.At first impression, the failure to approve the draft resolution might seem like a setback for the path being pursued by the #PolisarioFront and its allies within the #EuropeanUnion 🇪🇺 to thwart the final ratification of the agreement and halt negotiations on a new fisheries agreement. The truth is that the matter is entirely the opposite, and the prevailing belief among friends in Parliament is that the voting outcome was extremely positive. 2.Positive because losing the vote by a margin of just one vote 359 when the required absolute majority is 360 represents the strongest indicator of steadily growing support within Parliament, reinforcing the belief that it is turning into an objective ally of the Sahrawi people in this battle. And perhaps the stormy session of the Parliament’s Agriculture Committee on 20 November, with representatives of the Commission, where the absolute majority of the various political groups expressed their rejection of the amendments related to labeling Sahrawi products, stands as the greatest proof. 3.It suffices to look back and compare to recognize the enormous positive development and the increasing awareness of the essence of the Court’s decisions and the Commission’s intentions to circumvent them. In the context of ratifying the previous agreement, on 13 November 2018, Parliament’s Agriculture Committee endorsed the Commission’s approach to “integrating #WesternSahara 🇪🇭 into the agreement” by an absolute majority, and on 16 January 2019, Parliament ratified it by a majority of 444 votes to 167. The difference between yesterday and today is very clear. 4.Today’s voting outcome is an indicator of utmost importance in connection with upcoming votes, especially those related to the “request for an advisory opinion from the European Court” to overturn the agreement, which will soon be initiated. It is also crucial in view of Parliament’s vote for final ratification of the agreement in the subsequent phase, especially since there is a tendency within the Commission to negotiate a new fisheries agreement. 5.The vote shows, on one hand, for the first time, a supportive majority in the process of forming, and on the other hand, it highlights the scale of the conflict and contradictions within which the European institutions find themselves against the backdrop of this illegitimate agreement. Contradictions between the Commission and the Member States, between the Commission and Parliament, between the Union and the Court, and between the Union and the farmers. 6.Finally, today’s voting process was not within the framework of final ratification of the agreement as a whole, but rather around a detailed point concerning the amendment introduced by the Commission in the agreement regarding the labeling of products imported from #WesternSahara 🇪🇭 with the designations “Laayoune-Saguia el-Hamra” and “Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab.” These are the administrative designations used by the Moroccan occupation in clear violation of the Court’s decisions, which affirm that “the Kingdom of Morocco 🇲🇦 and Western Sahara 🇪🇭 are distinct and separate countries” where Rabat possesses no form of sovereignty, and which require the Commission to label the territory’s products with the label “Western Sahara” and the international country code EH, contrary to MA, which is specific to Morocco.

Thinking of heroic Saharawis on this 15th Anniversary of the #GdeimIzikCamp when the tents stood tall like their people. It is forever our duty to remember the legacy left behind by those who remain imprisoned behind dark walls of the occupations prisons. #SaharaOccidental 🇪🇭✊🏾

Happy 35th Anniversary to the #VeniceCommission! 🎉 Congratulations on an astonishing record of impact, built on assiduous independence and impartiality, and respect for diverse constitutional traditions. This unique @CoE institution, which is complementary to mine, is needed more than ever as we see efforts to unravel the #RuleofLaw. We must protect its achievements and equip it to engage with rapidly changing societies - from AGI to the climate crisis. Member states should strongly support this unique global institution!
