You buy a $1000 cow for $1100 which you marked as a -$100 loss, but when you sell the cow you valued it at $1100. Cost basis needs to be consistent, so when you sold the $1000 cow for $1300 you profited $300.

@hourly_shitpost Another explanation. The cow was bought for $800 and sold at $1000. -800 + 1000 = 200 (represented by a) That $1000 cow was bought back for $1100 1000 - 1100 = -100 (b) The cow now at 1100, was sold for $1300. -1100 + 1300 = 200 (c) a + b + c 200 - 100 + 200 100 + 200 = 300

What is it then?
