In February 2021, Adam Hefer (87) and Johanna "Tannie Duifie" Oosthuizen (84) were brutally murdered on their smallholding in Bapsfontein, Gauteng. This was their second attack. In December 2020, intruders had robbed them of cash, a firearm, cellphone, and TV, but left them unharmed. On the fatal evening, attackers ambushed the couple as they returned home around 8pm. They were assaulted and tortured before being shot. The attackers then set the house on fire, burning their bodies inside. It remains unclear what, if anything, was stolen in the final attack, as the fire destroyed much of the scene. No arrests were reported. A Bible was found between their two bodies.

Serious violent crime in South Africa has spiraled out of control. In any functioning democracy, a government so spectacularly incapable, and often unwilling, to protect its citizens would have been voted out years ago. Instead, we have seen active complicity in the breakdown of law and order: the deliberate weakening, politicization and mismanagement of the entire criminal justice system, from understaffed, unproductive and often corrupt police units to dysfunctional courts and overcrowded prisons. The result is not merely incompetence, but the effective surrender of millions of South Africans to predators.

60-year-old Robert Graham Cilliers and his life partner Ansie van Aardt were in bed on their smallholding in Gerardsville, Centurion when armed attackers surprised them and opened fire through the window. A gunfight broke out as Cilliers tried to defend their home. Both were shot in the head, Graham also between the eyes. The attackers were heavily armed, "as if they were going to war," according to a close friend. The couple was killed in cold blood, shot execution style.

A lot of people, when they first hear about South Africa, are stunned by how “normal” we still seem. On 17 August 2023 (early morning hours), four attackers broke into the farmhouse of Tim Platt and his wife Amanda Platt near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They forced entry by breaking through layers of security. They broke down the front door, security gate, a window, and burglar bars. During the assault, the attackers chanted “Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer.” One attacker grabbed Amanda Platt, hit her arm with an object, and pulled her while continuing the chant. She was then beaten with a bolt cutter and lead pipes, and stabbed with a spear. Tim Platt fought off the attackers. Amanda managed to escape, armed herself, and returned to help him, but the attackers had already fled by that point. This once again highlights the chanting of the controversial “Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer” slogan immediately before and during the violent attack on the victims.

Treasury tightens BEE rules. Under the draft framework, firms bidding for government work will need to demonstrate that at least 40% of their previous procurement spend was directed to enterprises that are majority black-owned and managed. This introduces a measurable compliance threshold that shifts empowerment requirements from evaluation criteria to a precondition for participation. In addition, bidders will be required to subcontract a minimum of 30% of contract value to South African citizens, embedding localisation and ownership targets deeper into supply chains.

On 13 May 2019, on Kapteinsdrift farm near Bonnievale in the Western Cape, 53-year-old farmer Jurie Wynand Wessels (also known as Tool Wessels) and his wife Liezel were subjected to hours of sadistic torture by four seasonal workers they employed. The attackers, Ntabanyane John Tlali, Thabiso Nomoro Ramollo, Moeketsi Max Hlaudi, and Keketso Thabang Matsabisa stabbed both victims, poured boiling water over them repeatedly, punched them in the mouth whenever they prayed, cried, or spoke to each other, and even attempted to cut off Liezel’s fingers with a grinder. They prolonged the agony by dragging Wessels along the vineyard vines before finally shooting him in the head, killing him. His wife survived the brutal assault. They forgot to rob.

In 2017, British-born Susan Howarth (64) and her husband Robert Lynn (66) were attacked by masked intruders on their farm. The couple was tied up, repeatedly stabbed, and tortured for several hours with a blowtorch (burning Lynn on his chest, arms, and legs). Attackers also stuffed a plastic bag down Howarth’s throat and attempted to strangle Lynn with one around his neck. They were then shot (Howarth twice in the head, Lynn in the neck), loaded into a pickup truck, and dumped in a ditch. Howarth died; Lynn survived his injuries.
