I went to Rome on a Wednesday morning n April, to cover Pope Francis’s funeral on the Saturday and be home Sunday. Instead, I had a stroke on the Friday. I couldn’t do anything. Three months later, I finally slept in my own bed, albeit temporarily. It felt, well, miraculous.

I undressed, washed, brushed my hair, and dressed again this morning, all by myself. This may mean nothing to you, but it’s a huge step on the path to regaining my independence!

Well, update. I can prop myself up in bed, drink from a cup or glass, and ‘sign’ my name with the ‘bad’ arm. I can wear jocks, not a nappy. I can walk with a walker. This week, I’ll lose the catheter, and transfer to a car as a passenger. Onwards!
