The Supreme Court decided Callais on April 29th.   Since then, Black political representation has been under direct assault across the South.   And I haven’t heard a mumbling word from @BernieSanders.   I checked both his X accounts — silent.   I checked his Instagram — nothing.   I checked his Senate website — crickets.   At this point I’m starting to get worried. Has anybody checked on Senator Sanders?   Because Black political power is under attack and somehow we can’t seem to run him down.   If y’all know somewhere else to check, let me know so we can get word to him.

Gary Chambers Jr., a #civilrights activist and former U.S. Senate candidate, led protests and provided testimony at the #Louisiana State Capitol in #BatonRouge on May 8, 2026. He and other demonstrators were at the Capitol to oppose #Republican-led efforts to redraw the state’s congressional maps, following a #SupremeCourt determination that previous boundaries were unconstitutional. Chambers advocated for maintaining two majority-#Black congressional districts. He argued that any reduction in Black representation, given that Louisiana’s population is roughly one-third Black, constitutes "theft". During a #Senate committee meeting, Chambers characterized the redistricting proposals as "#racist" and "reconstructionist". He criticized Republican lawmakers for attempting to eliminate seats of power from Black communities.

Look at their faces. What do you see? I wanted to look them in the eye and say, on the record, that they are attempting to reconstruct this government to undo Black progress. Their targeting of @calvin4clerk is rooted in that reality, and it needed to be called out plainly. I showed up speaking for myself. No organization in Louisiana sent me. No party asked me to come. I say that to make clear much of this work is being done independently, without formal partnerships, and without the budgets, staff, or institutional backing many established organizations have. I came because what they are doing is wrong. The court reconstruction happening in New Orleans has been done in different ways already in Baton Rouge and across this state—especially in the largest, Blackest cities—to dilute Black political power. I started Civics for the People because I know many of us don’t know what is happening inside government or how these systems are used. It’s my way of teaching the game and helping our people move with knowledge. Their elections are in 2027. We can send them home to frown and chew grass much gum as they please. What happened in the State of Tennessee was the largest and swiftest disenfranchisement of Black people that we've seen in at least a century. It's on all of us to organize, mobilize, and participate in bigger numbers than their maps account for.

As Southern states rush to redraw congressional maps to silence Black voters, it’s time for African Americans and our allies to adopt a new Southern strategy. I won’t lay out every step publicly, but one thing is clear: mass voter registration and mobilization across the South must be at the center of it.
