Defence minister David McGuinty says Canada will not engage offensively in the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, but is considering helping Gulf countries depending on what they ask for. He added the U.S has not made a formal request to Canada.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen took aim at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Carney warned about Trump’s assault on the international order at Davos, then “immediately signs up in support of the war in Iran.” He said that unless countries push back and demand accountability for civilian deaths in places like Gaza and the West Bank, and for unlawful wars like Iran, the world risks sliding into a system with no enforceable rules.

🇵🇸 Israeli forces opened fire on a car carrying the Bani Odeh family in the town of Tammun, in the northern occupied West Bank, killing Ali Khaled Bani Odeh, 37, his wife Waad, 35, and two of their sons, Mohammad (5) and Othman (7). ▪️Two other children in the car survived the shooting - Mustafa and his brother Khaled, who were wounded. ▪️One of the surviving boys told reporters that after soldiers pulled him from the vehicle, he was viciously beaten. He said the soldiers shouted “We killed dogs.” “I asked the soldier ‘do you love your mom and dad?’ He said ‘yes’. So I asked him ‘then why did you kill mine?’ he responded by punching me.” ▪️Israeli military said troops were operating in the area during an arrest raid, adding the incident is under review.

On this International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we join Muslim communities in condemning this hatred, which has no place in Canada. We will continue to take action through the new Advisory Council, grounded in our values and our communities.

I am extremely disappointed that the court has refused to put a stop to Al-Quds Day, which has long been a venue for antisemitism, hatred, intimidation and the glorification of terrorism. While the judge cited Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, when we talk about rights we need to be clear that every person has the right to safety and security. We need to be clear that no one in Canada has the right to incite violence or free licence to intimidate and hate. The judge also said that Toronto Police Service do not need an injunction to preserve the peace. That's unbelievable! If that's the case, I fully expect that the police will immediately intervene at the first sign of hate, violence or glorification of terrorist organizations. I won't stop working to put an end to the hatred and division that runs too rampant on Canada's streets. I won't stop working to protect the greatest province in the greatest country in the world.

This afternoon, I’ve instructed my Attorney General to pursue an injunction against the Al-Quds Day demonstration planned for Toronto. Hate, violence and intimidation have no place on the streets of Canada and our government will fight it however we can.
