John XXIII, the Pope Who Talked to an Extraterrestrial? Did a "higher power" reach out to the Vatican 65 years ago? In July 1961, at the papal summer residence in Castelgandolfo, Pope John XXIII and his assistant and personal secretary, Msgr. Loris Capovilla, were walking in the gardens at night when they saw an oval-shaped spacecraft emitting colored lights descend from the sky. The craft then landed on the south lawn. A strange humanoid being emerged, surrounded by a golden light and with large, elongated ears. According to Capovilla’s account, he and the Pope knelt in awe, recognizing it as a “celestial event.” The being stayed while the Pope approached and walked toward it. They talked privately for about 20 minutes. Capovilla stayed back and couldn’t hear their words. The visitor then returned to the spacecraft and took off. Later, the Pope told Capovilla: “The children of God are everywhere, and sometimes we have difficulty recognizing our own brothers.” The story was shared by Argentine mystic and visionary Luis Sartori, a relative of Capovilla’s family (Capovilla was a first cousin of his maternal grandmother), and published in Argentina’s Diario Popular in 2014. However, it remains unconfirmed by the Vatican.
