SCAM ALERT - Fake Service Ontario Text Message Have you received a text claiming you owe money on a radar ticket and threatening license suspension or credit score damage? It's a scam. #ManitoulinOPP is warning the public about a fraudulent text message impersonating Service Ontario. The message falsely claims that you owe money, threatens license suspension, demerit points and credit score damage, and it includes a link to a fake website pressuring you to pay immediately. This is a scam. Do not click the link or provide any personal information. How to identify a scam: 1. Unsolicited text messages demanding urgent payment 2. Threats like demerit point loss or prosecution. 3. Suspicious links (ex: ontario.tosafedriving .cc) - this is NOT a secure or official website link 4. Incorrect terminology - Ontario uses Service Ontario, not DMV. 5. Sense of urgency - scammers will often pressure you to act fast. How to protect yourself: 1. Do NOT click on unknown links or share personal information. 2. Verify information by contacting the organization directly using official contact information or attend in person to confirm. 3. Verify that the website link and URL are secure - legitimate websites begin with https:// and display a lock icon. 4. Use the "Take Five, Tell Two" rule - take five minutes to think about it, and talk to two people before acting. Report scams by calling the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca, or by calling your local police detachment. Stay Alert. Share this post.
