all modern CAT rated and certified cables are safe to install in interior walls—aside from proving they can move the speeds they say they do, that’s the whole point of rating & certifying. i would recommend CAT5e and above for modern applications. as for POE, 5e can handle the basic version. above that, CAT6+ should be fine

@TracketPacer Ok so serious question… can you recommend a cat that will safely run through interior walls and is ok for Poe. Have UniFi switches and it’s to connect to Apple TV as well as a Poe cam

A good example is the Cisco nexus 93240yc. Where you can swap out transceivers but if you want to use a higher wattage transceiver like copper you have to manually tell the switch that a port group will be copper base t so the backend can adjust the power to handle the module. Or on a shared combo port where you can enable the rj45 or sfp cage by specifying media type this tells the trace on the back end which front end to use.

so not only is there an auto-negotiation process from local PHY to its link partner PHY, but there is also another auto-negotiation process internal to the board between PHY & MAC that occurs over traces but it is NOT THE SAME THING as the other kind of auto-negotiation oh my god why
