Curious what others think. Is flying a drone over a flock of birds, causing them to fly, harassment of wildlife?

1. Make way for the king of the solar system! 👑 New Webb images of Jupiter highlight the planet's features, including its turbulent Great Red Spot (shown in white here), in amazing detail. These images were processed by citizen scientist Judy Schmidt: go.nasa.gov/3K9zMqC

My graduation is either going to be amazing or go terribly depending on what I wear. I’m not going up on stage wearing a collared shirt and no padding. This is my graduation, and I deserve to be happy. Anyone who doesn’t want to see me in a dress can leave. I am my own woman! 🏳️‍⚧️

I’m starting to get really worried that going into a science career is not a good option for me. I’ve been reading a lot about how terrible the pay is, and how bad of situations many scientists end up in. I’m assuming this also applies to museum curators (@Myrmecos ?)… 1/4

@Ferox_Formicae @Myrmecos Pay is related in part to how many degrees you have. You'll want at least a master's degree for somewhat livable pay. I would add that your illustration skills will definitely be a selling point. I suppose you could consider a commercial art position and do bugs on the side.

@myrmecoPhil Someone has come up with the rather silly name "thread-waisted ant" for Aphaenogaster. Thread-necked fits this one better. 🤓

Papua is famously known for its lack of larger mammals. This Aphaenogaster ant is apparently filling the ecological gap of a giraffe.

@LMDiepenbrock I first saw one of these in Wisconsin, on a Florida car getting away from the madness.

@Ferox_Formicae I hear you. I'm not at all happy about the world my generation is leaving your generation. On the other hand, nature is resilient, and if we can change our ways, insects can make a good comeback.

The insect-apocalypse is a really scary thing to think about, especially when you’re someone who is trying to start their career that involves insects. I’ve already been seeing the lack of insects showing up to light sheets, and the fact that it’s getting worse is horrifying.

I wonder when the awful linguistic trend of using the word "literally" redundantly & incorrectly - as a term of emphasis rather than a means of correcting any possible confusion around something that might be misconstrued as being figurative or hyperbolic - will wear off.
