At eleven, Erin and his dad faced a tough choice: stay with friends and what felt comfortable—or stand on conviction and step into the unknown. They chose courage. It wasn’t dramatic. At fourteen, Erin faced another crossroads—chase an opportunity that looked like a launchpad for his career or stay in Trail Life where his character was being shaped but the future was less certain. He chose formation over fast-tracking and trusted God with the outcome. “Honestly, I’m really glad we made that decision,” Erin says. “In Trail Life I’ve met some of my closest friends—solid Christian guys who pour into each other. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Today he’s preparing to graduate, already licensed and working as a flight instructor, with goals in aviation and possible service in the Air Force Reserve. Boys don’t need men who have all the answers. But they do need men. Men who are willing to listen and laugh. To give up a weekend. To go on an adventure. As part of the Trail Life Yukon adventure, boys and dads worked together to create Klondike sleds. Side-by-side, they built sleds, practiced fire-building, and prepared for cold-weather camping. They spent a weekend camping in the snow, competing with other Troops in a race using the sleds they built and the skills they mastered to compete for the Yukon Trophy. Examples of this unique interaction abound. Unlike sports, where instruction is one-directional from coach to player, active fatherhood takes a different approach. It’s about involvement, shared experiences, and fostering holistic development. It’s not just about physical prowess, team development, or skill mastery; it’s about navigating life’s challenges together, instilling resilience, developing character, and cultivating a sense of responsibility and leadership.
