Torontonians don’t need more excuses — they need safer transit.  My plan is straightforward: police at every station, clear standards for cleanliness and lighting, and finally moving forward on platform doors. The time for delay is over — let’s get on with it.

It would cost $4.1 billion and take 20 years to install the doors across all 75 subway stations on Lines 1, 2 and 4. Because different TTC stations were built at different times using different methods, it would require seven different designs across the whole network. The city couldn’t install the barriers without “some pretty significant disruptions,” like station closures. It’s rare in North America for platform edge doors to be installed because of higher costs coupled with the deteriorating conditions of older transit systems. San Francisco and New York City have cancelled multimillion-dollar projects for such reasons. Weighing on the idea of platform doors is the cash-strapped TTC’s growing repair backlog — nearly $12 billion over the next 15 years, which has shown up in riders’ commutes as subway slow zones. There needs to be dedicated funding for transit safety from higher levels of government. @moretransitso There are many factors that explain this. They include (but not limited to) TTC putting speed restrictions on its operators, too many stops spaced close together, lack of signal priority and left turning cars blocking streetcars just to name a few

Toronto takes pride in the fact that we saved our streetcars when most other cities got rid of them. However our streetcar network is now the slowest in the world, let's implement these changes to speed up the streetcars and make a network we can truly be proud of

Commentary This is why there needs to be a 0 tolerance for any sort of drug use. Dont listen to any special interest groups or activists who think this is ok or should be left alone. Should there be an overdose, this triggers a medical emergency causing service suspensions.

Platform edge doors is something we all want. Mr. Bradford has failed to explain how he will fund the over $4 billion cost (not including cost overruns) to install them in addition to months/years of station closures.

@jackhauen Metrolinx can’t seem to get along with anyone they work with. They can’t work with their contractors overseeing Toronto transit projects, its European partners do this project and now word that ATU local 1587 is looking to strike.

Senior levels of government have a history of interfering in TTC business. Is this $200 million being proposed unconditional for the TTC to spend how it sees fit or is it tied to specific projects.

Editorial The TTC has over a billion dollars of unfunded capital projects just to maintain current levels of service. This $200 million in proposed funding is only a fraction of what the TTC is seeking.

PSA I understand this tragedy will affect those involved but I want to reiterate to everyone about prior railway safety procedures. Teach your kids these tips as well. Don’t trespass on railway tracks. Obey all crossing gates and arms. Only cross at designated crossings.
