Tomorrow is the first official day of Spring! GPO Bookbinder Sarah Hurtt is helping us feel spring-y using the ancient art of marbling. GPO is one of the few organizations in the world to still practice marbling. #SpringEquinox#WelcomeSpring
In 1956, GPO made a key production shift by introducing a gluing machine, replacing the labor-intensive process of hand-gluing passport pages. This move sped things up and made passports even more durable. #Passport100@TravelGov
#OnThisDay in 1961, James L. Harrison became GPO Public Printer. Harrison's connections with employees were critically important during the 1960s, as GPO’s workload more than doubled, with revenues growing from $99.5 million in 1960 to $203.7 million in 1969.
Happy Freedom of Information Day! GPO is dedicated to providing the American public with free and easy access to Government information and records. Celebrate the day by visiting GPO’s GovInfo, the one-stop site to information published by the Federal Government. govinfo.gov#AmericaInformed
James Madison was born on this day in 1751. This date is also known as Freedom of Information Day for Madison’s views on public access to Government information. Today GPO serves as the “means of acquiring” access to Government information that Madison envisioned, providing public access to Government documents and publications both digitally through GovInfo (govinfo.gov), in print, and through its 1,200 partners in the Federal depository library community nationwide.
Recording, printing, and publishing Congress’s debates has been vital to our mission. This role ensures transparency and accountability to Congress and the American people.

Happy Flashback Friday! Check out this 1923 article from The Washington Times-Herald about the Congressional Record.
“The Congressional Record is printed at the Government Printing Office, the largest in the world, and more than four hundred skilled employees work from 7 p.m. till 7 a.m. on the Record,” reads the article.
GPO still works through the night to make the Congressional Record available daily. See it on GPO’s GovInfo. govinfo.gov/app/collection…
GPO Director Hugh Halpern and GPO Superintendent of Documents Scott Matheson congratulate the University of Maryland, College Park’s McKeldin Library on their 100th anniversary in GPO’s Federal Depository Library Program. Director Halpern and Superintendent Matheson visited the library and presented Celina N. McDonald, Holly Mercer and Aaron Wilson of the library with a plaque. Thanks to this library for helping GPO deliver on our vision of an America Informed! @UMDLibraries
GPO Director Hugh Halpern visits the GPO Distribution Center in Laurel, MD to celebrate the facility’s 50th year in operation. Congratulations and thank you to this wonderful team for distributing Government information to the American people for 50 years and counting!
Less is more! In 1953, the U.S. passport slimmed down from 48 to 32 pages. Printing and binding a smaller passport meant reduced material and production costs at GPO while still meeting the needs of passport holders. Same power, fewer pages. #Passport100@TravelGov
GPO Director Hugh Halpern cuts the ribbon and starts the button on GPO’s new press that will modernize the Agency’s publishing capabilities. The first official production run included Commemorative Tour Pass tickets for the Capitol Visitor Center.
GPO is proud to produce the White House programs for the presentation of the Medal of Honor. President Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to Master Sergeant Roderick W. Edmonds (posthumously), Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis (posthumously), and Staff Sergeant Terry Richardson of the United States Army. @USArmy@WhiteHouse
