Not enough people talk about King Kelly • .307/.368/.438 (.806 OPS, 138 OPS+) • 1813 H, 69 HR, 950 RBI, 46.0 WAR • Famously aggressive base-runner • Credited with many crazy stories • 2x batting champ, 3x 2B leader • Invented the hit-and-run play • Played every single position • Invented the hook slide • Was a player-manager • In 1886, recorded one of only 16 player-seasons in MLB history with at least a .380 BA and 150 runs scored • According to one account that's almost certainly untrue (but we can always hope), Kelly was alleged, while serving as player-manager, to have been watching a game from the bench when the batter hit a foul popup; seeing that his catcher wouldn't be able to make the play, Kelly substituted himself into the game while the ball was in the air, ran out of the dugout to make the play, caught the ball, and forced the umpire to declare the batter out
