This week's featured childhood cancer hero is June Peden-Stade. June was the spunkiest, sassiest little girl you’d ever meet. Despite everything that June went through, she rarely lost the smile on her face. In 2020, June was diagnosed with stage 4 intermediate-risk neuroblastoma. At first, treatment helped shrink her tumor by 40%, but then it began progressing more aggressively. Lucy Garibaldi was just 14 months old when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Every newborn in the United States gets a “heel-stick” blood test to check for certain rare diseases, but cancer risk isn’t included. A Crazy 8 team led by Dr. Sharon Plon and Dr. Lisa Diller is working to change that by studying a genetic test that uses newborn blood samples to identify nine genes linked to early-onset cancers, including the RB1 gene that can cause retinoblastoma. Detecting these risks early could allow doctors to monitor babies sooner, preserving their sight and saving lives. The team is also developing an affordable, AI-supported screening test and educational resources for parents and pediatricians, with the goal of making newborn cancer risk screening possible nationwide.
