I remember the first time I noticed my palms peeling in layers. People around me kept saying it was normal, everyone’s skin does that. But the more I looked into it, the more I realized they were wrong. Normal skin shedding doesn’t happen like that. What I was seeing had a name, a pattern and a reason behind it. The condition is called Exfoliative Keratolysis. It happens when the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, stops holding together properly. Normally, skin cells shed invisibly, one by one. In this condition, the cells separate in sheets instead of individually, which is why the peeling is so visible and keeps repeating in cycles. This is known as Natural desquamation (normal skin shedding). It is the continuous process where the skin's outermost layer sheds dead cells (corneocytes) to allow new cells from deeper layers to emerge. This natural exfoliation, taking about 14 weeks, helps keep skin healthy and protected. It is driven by enzymes called kallikreins that gradually break down the connections between cells, allowing them to detach one by one without us noticing. Now, back to Exfoliative Keratolysis.... This condition isn’t caused by allergies, eczema, fungus or any infection. It’s structural. The bonds that normally hold the skin cells together are weaker than they should be. When those bonds break down prematurely, the top layer separates and peels in sheets. There are things that can make it worse. Heat, friction, sweating, frequent handwashing and harsh detergents all stress the palms, which are already one of the hardest-working parts of your body. These triggers don’t create the condition on their own, but they amplify it, making the cycles of peeling more noticeable. To manage it, use gentle soaps instead of dergents, avoid prolonged water exposure, minimize friction and use barrier creams. These steps don’t make the peeling disappear overnight, but they reduce its frequency and severity over time. Added to that: There’s another condition called Keratolytic Winter Erythema. It’s largely genetic, usually appears early in life and tends to flare during cold months. It can affect both palms and soles. In Keratolytic Winter Erythema, peeling is usually accompanied by redness, itching and sometimes a burning sensation. The skin is inflamed and sensitive, not just peeling. This distinguishes it clearly from Exfoliative Keratolysis, even if at first glance the peeling might look similar.
