The US cannot afford to fall further behind in science & technology. US R&D hit $823B in 2023 vs. China’s $781B. But 2019–2023 growth tells a different story: 👉 US 4.7% vs. China 8.9% Adjusted for cost efficiency, China’s effective investment is $1.8T, way more than US levels.

U.S. trade performance has deteriorated in advanced industries. That is a major problem because these industries have high fixed costs and require substantial investments in R&D, so they depend on large customer bases to achieve scale economies and remain globally competitive.
