For those who saw the biopic( I did not)… which sibling did you learn who he was he closet to? Which sibling was he most distant from? I am just curious.

@ShadeTV @TheChrisLambert Either way there’s intent from the creators to address it, this is my point that these reviewers are intentionally or incompetently missing this in their reviews of why the allegations aren’t in the movie

Today is a reminder that a film critic's job doesn't include agreeing with your fandom. It's to analyze and evaluate a film and to put them into context, objectively, from a journalistic POV and within the greater context of film history. Many of us are fans of Michael Jackson, but *as a film critic* that's not an automatic stamp of approval for a film. We're not judging his discography, choreography or talent here. We're simply focused on critiquing the FILM. Furthermore, a negative piece of film criticism shouldn't dissuade you from seeing a movie about a man that may be a major idol to you.

I’ve been reading the discourse around Michael, and even without seeing it yet, I have a pretty good sense of what the issue is. A lot of critics seem to want the film to be something it’s not. They’re looking for a deeper exploration of the backstory and the controversy, rather than a more streamlined, accessible version of the story. On the flip side, general audiences often just want to hear the music, watch the performances, and have a good time. I don’t think either perspective is wrong, but that disconnect between expectations is where the divide comes from. More broadly, I think it’s a real issue that many people in my field struggle to engage with a film on its own terms, instead of judging it against what they think it should be, especially when it comes to movies that are centered around real people. I remember the same debate around The Greatest Showman, which I personally love. A common criticism was that P.T. Barnum was a terrible person and that the film glossed over that reality. But that was never the point of the movie. It wasn’t trying to be a historically accurate portrait. Instead, it was a musical about dreams, identity, and embracing what makes you different. I think this kind of mismatch in expectations is a big reason why there’s such a growing divide between critics and general audiences. At the same time, it goes both ways. Critics often champion more awards-driven films that can be inaccessible, and general audiences sometimes go in expecting something different and come away disappointed. The disconnect isn’t one-sided. This is happening across both groups.

@BBCNews I’m so glad everyday people don’t actually care about media reviews , and will go watch the movie because positive word of mouth. The box office results will speak for itself.

All these positive reviews about Michael, I’m not surprised one bit. This is mostly because after watching The Equalizer 3, I knew that Antoine Fuqua is 100% in his pocket. After all these years he’s not getting rusty, he’s polishing his craft.

@NextBestPicture Pretty much what I feared the movie was going to be—a glaze-job of Michael Jackson’s life without any significant exploration of the problematic chapters of his life. I’ll be skipping this one.

MICHAEL presents an overly audience-friendly take on Michael Jackson’s life story (only up until the release of “Bad”) that will work for the masses and devoted fans eager to watch one of the world’s largest entertainers at the peak of his popularity “play the hits” and find the courage to stand up to his abusive father (portrayed with simmering tension in every scene by Colman Domingo) on the big screen. However, the direction by Antoine Fuqua is as straightforward as it gets for music biopics, playing things so safely that it offers nothing revelatory or even remotely compelling, unless that deeper exploration is being reserved for the supposed second film(?). Jaafar Jackson is undeniably impressive though, capturing his uncle’s mannerisms, stage presence, and vulnerability in a genuine breakout performance. And shoutout to Juliano Krue Valdi who excels as young Michael with only a fraction of the screen time. Ultimately, you’ve seen this film many, many times before.

How do these types get an invite to a Michael Jackson premiere? Yet long time true fans can’t? Yes, I saw his Facebook page proclaiming to be such a MJ fan and going to the premiere in Berlin. I’m not looking for folks to just worship at the alter of Jackson but ummm yeah, this is not a good look. Let’s start vetting these influencers with numbers better.

@AkhilJaxxn Michael is purposefully ignoring Branca here, what you do when you really despise someone. I cannot believe this man is about to present himself as some kind of loyal partner to Michael in the biopic. More fans need to realise he’s a fraud, & MJ hated him

The sequel is never coming. They can’t touch the allegations. The second half of his life is a mess. It’s really no way to clean it up without mentioning his issues and personal drama so it’s doubtful a sequel is coming.
Variety@Variety

The original ending of #Michael focused on how the child abuse allegations in 1993 impacted Jackson’s life: • One scene saw the King of Pop staring into a mirror with a sorrowful gaze as police car lights flashed behind him • The sequence with investigators searching Neverland Ranch was among several scenes left on the cutting room floor • Lionsgate scrapped the original ending after attorneys for the Jackson estate highlighted a settlement clause with accuser Jordan Chandler that barred him being depicted in the film variety.com/2026/film/news…
