@antdasilvasurfa @JimCosta_ There is a flip side to my argument. There is reason to believe inflation will continue and get worse. In that case, this looks terrible for McGonigle because he will be playing for just $18.75 mil when normal salaries could be $50+ million.
English

@TroyVan11 @JimCosta_ It’s definitely risky, but he’s been tearing it up at every level forever now and seems to look very natural in the majors. I’m okay with paying him now, because if he turns out to only be average, come 2034, you’re not having a heart attack for paying $18.75M
English

I’ve already seen texters saying the Tigers jumped the gun
They don’t understand how shrewd this is
It buys them out of arbitration and 2 expensive years of free agency
The highest paid SS currently make $30M per season, will be +$40M for those years

Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle becomes the latest young player to sign extension with 8-year, $150 million deal
English

@confusion_reign It’s a gamble. He’s under contract with the Tigers until 2031. They could have paid him about $50 million for those years. Instead, they are paying up to $160 mil for those 5 + 3 more. If he stays in baseball and they still want him, it’s great. If not, they gambled and lost.
English

Can someone who follows baseball tell me if this is good news?
Detroit Tigers@tigers
Homegrown and here to stay ✍️ We have agreed to terms with Kevin McGonigle on an eight-year contract extension covering the 2027-2034 seasons!
English

@TroyVan11 Wrote before the season started that McGonigle, among all players who have arrived as rookies with the Tigers, had the best bat-to-ball skills since Kaline. And meant it.
English

@deeptocenter It’s the amount of time down the road that concerns me. The Tigers don’t see a benefit from this deal until 2032. Will he even be in baseball then? Will they want him?
English

@TroyVan11 You don’t know how the new CBA is going to change these club control years. Plus, if Kevin is nearly as good as we think he is, good chance that he would have made $150M in just the three years of free agency they bought out. It’s a good deal. Not related to Skub at all.
English

@VandyonTigers I agree! This is the equivalent of trading away prospects to win now in that the end result is gambling on the future. Will he still be in baseball in 2031? Will they even want him? Have they even extended Skubal?
English

61 MLB at-bats gets you a $150 million contract? The kid looks talented, no doubt—but he hasn’t even faced an extended slump yet. Any player in his right mind signs that deal immediately. This is a front office selling “future savings” to ownership after evaluating a rookie over 17 big league games. Wild business.
Go Tigers!
English

@JimCosta_ I’m a finance guy, so that’s how I look at it. It’s essentially a gamble. They’re betting he has above average production and are forgoing their evaluation period and pre-arb cheap salaries to lock in 3 extra years. It’s risky because that’s 5 yrs from now and this is baseball.
English

@JimCosta_ I meant the years ‘31’-‘34. Excuse me. Those are the 3 extra years they bought.
English

@TroyVan11 They aren’t paying him until he’s 31-34 with this deal
They are paying him 21-30
English

@JimCosta_ What is the % chance that you know for certain that we would want the 31-34 version of McGonigle? That’s a long ways away.
English

@JimCosta_ I understand it fully. I think they took on a decent amount of financial risk and increased cash flow during a time when their top player remains unsigned after this season. I would have like to see them work out Skubal’s before McGonigle’s.
English

@SaintHendrx @TigersJUK Neither one is going anywhere for like 4-5 years, so yeah.
English

@TigersJUK Or…. And hear me out…
We just pay skubal and keep the prospects we have😅
English

@TigersJUK Keith and McGonigle aren’t locked up cheap. Quite the contrary. The club could have used their 6 years of club control to pay them ~$30-$40 million over those years. McGonigle now gets about $105 mil for those 6 with signing bonus. Thats a premium, my friend.
English

@Castellani2014 I’m glad he’s locked in, but it wasn’t a great move from an organizational standoint. If he gets hurts or doesn’t perform, this will become an albatross. They could have given him like $30 mil over his club control. Now, he’s getting ~$115 million. Tigers have all the risk here
English

@Wolffman96 Me, too. And, having been stationed at Fort Riley, KS, the other ballpark I’ve been to the most is Kauffman Stadium.

What is the opposing team you saw most Comerica?
Mine was always the Royals
Easily.

@MichaelHugall There isn’t really a reason to believe JV belongs on this team. Love him, but his performance (velocity) is no longer up to par. Not saying give up on him. Just, he needs to prove he belongs (yet).
English

I seriously think we consider keeping Wenceel and releasing Jahmai once Verlander comes back.
Send JV to the bullpen keep and rolling Montero every 5th day.

Tigermike The Sequel@papatigermike
Kind of telling where Jahmai Jones stands when he’s not in the starting lineup vs a lefty.

@NafoRahim Having watched the entire Ukraine war from X, I see a lot of the same propaganda coming from Washington that I’ve seen from Moscow. I believe nothing until I’ve researched it myself. Trump is a lying machine.

@SleeperTigers I believe he is elite as a CF. And, I have an inclination to believe Javy gets more hits as a CF. That would be an interesting stat to learn.
English

So… I’m hearing he’s the best center fielder in baseball

@TigersJUK McCann had a pretty good career. No complaints from me about his time in Detroit.
