@BeautifulSOAB “The sequels were never going to get made anyway, unlike 1, 2, and 3 the idea of 7, 8, and 9 came from people asking me about sequels” ok so he didn’t even want to do sequels which is why he let other authors do it when the licensing people asked

@TrueScottsmen It's not Legends, it's the Expanded Universe. Also, no. George Lucas authorized the EU to tell the story beyond his movies, viewing them as sequels and a part of his saga.

@BeautifulSOAB Lucas largely considered most of the old legends stuff as either alternative stories or were approved by the company, not him personally. His vision for the overall narrative as he saw it was complete with just the six films. Everything else is just a nice bonus

@TrueScottsmen It's not Legends, it's the Expanded Universe. And that just shows that the EU all fit George Lucas's vision.

@BeautifulSOAB It undermines the sky-walker family narrative and Anakins arc if he just comes back after the ultimate sacrifice of overcoming evil for the sake of the love he felt for his son. If Palpatine just comes back than his sacrifice is pointless and there isn’t a satisfying ending now

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW It didn’t take much to get Georges approval though, which is why there’s so much legends content from as many different authors and game studios as there was

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW That has nothing to do with what I said. You said the EU had many different visions across it, and I pointed out how George Lucas needed to approve of each EU story, meaning it had to line up with his vision for Star Wars.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW A return of palpatine at all is inherently a bad idea and is more jingling keys than anything you mentioned in this entire twitter thread

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW Going scorched earth and sifting through legends content to make a new canon takes a lot more work than just one to one copying legends

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW And no, "going scorched earth and then picking and choosing the good stuff" is just laziness on the parts of the authors. That's them more or less wanting the benefits of all the cool concepts from the EU, yet not wanting to deal with working in an established continuity.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW George Lucas is many things, but he definitely needs someone to sit down and tell him no (there’s a reason Empire Strikes back is looked back as the best of the OT by most) so having that be the stamp of wether or not its good may not be the highest bar to follow

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW And lastly, no, the EU did not have "different visions" to it. Pretty much everything in the EU had to be signed off by George Lucas before it went to print and distribution, so no, it had to conform to George Lucas's vision first.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW For every interesting story in legends you had stuff like Han solo fist fighting a space otter queen and all were considered legitimate canon. (As for Dark Empire and ROS I think any story involving the return of Palpatine is inherently a poor idea)

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW And if the EU was, according to you, so bad and complete nonsense, why bring back EU concepts and even ripoff EU storylines, like what Rise of Skywalker did with both the Jedi Prince series and the Dark Empire comics?

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW It accomplishes being a nice little easter egg for Kotor fans while reiterating that yes, some parts of Kotor will be canon

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW Okay. What does namedropping the Rakatan Empire accomplish beyond that? By that point come up with something completely new if it's just for that one purpose.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW You gotta remember that 70% of the old legends stuff was either bad or just complete nonsense written by dozens of different people with different visions so scorching the earth and picking and choosing the good stuff is just the best way to go about it

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW Also using preexisting characters and concepts from the EU for anything Disney related is completely backwards and counterintuitive to them doing away with the EU in the first place.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW It being slow paced is its strongest point, its a slow burn story on the leadup to rebellion and how the Empire justifies taking more and more direct control of the republic, you might just not like political thrillers which is fine you just prefer faster shows with less depth

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW It's slow paced, the dialogue sucks, the characters suck and don't develop (and when they do, they rush them), the actual plots suck and make no sense if you think about them, and a crapload of other things.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW A scene where a guy pretending to be a historian mentioning something from the in universe history is relevant because he’s pretending to be a historian

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW A tiny reference to preexisting things here and there helps expand the universe and lays the seeds for tiny bits of world-building, hell the entire clone wars as an idea was from one throw away line in a new hope before George even had the idea for the prequels

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW It's not Legends, it's the Expanded Universe. And I see you didn't say "he's focusing on making a good Star Wars story". That's very telling of Gilroy. But even then, even without the key jangling, the story of Andor is still terrible on its own.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW Kotor and small references to you it are irrelevant to you? Thats a crazy thing to admit while also going “erm its the EU not legends” every reply

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW And saying it's "the other part of the staff putting in the small easter eggs" is just passing the buck. The show is still overall Gilroy's, and he had to approve of them before and after filming. And no, they don't help with the worldbuilding, since they're so irrelevant.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW Mentality like that is how we get netflix movies where characters have to tell you every little thing and every little detail and explain it all or else “its not relevant to the story as a whole”

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW So if the reference has nothing to do with the story, then cut it. That's just a general rule of storytelling. Either have their be an actual reason to be bringing it up, or don't bring it up at all. Gilroy bringing up that shit just makes him look like a tryhard.

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW Tony Gilroy isn’t the guy putting references to old legends novels and games, he’s focusing on making a good sci fi story about a resistance cell fighting against a fascist takeover, its the other part of the staff putting in the small easter eggs that help with worldbuilding

@BeautifulSOAB @SithAriSW “you can cut them and nothing would change” then thats not them jingling keys in your face thats them putting a small reference in the background, like say, an Easter egg being hidden for people who wanna find it (makes sense cause the people who made Andor love legends stuff)

@TrueScottsmen @SithAriSW 1. It's not Legends, it's the Expanded Universe. 2. Easter Eggs count as key jangling, especially when they don't add anything to the story. You could cut the references out and replace them with something else, and nothing would change
