AI SHRINKS THE SKILL PREMIUM A year ago, a portfolio co would ask me every week on tips to hire senior engineers; they found it really hard to attract seasoned builders. For the past couple of months, they have stayed conspicuously silent on this topic. Today, I asked them why. Had they finally found their dream senior engineer hire? They said "We don't need senior engineers. Our junior and mid-level engineers are able to use AI to solve every logic and system design problem." This will be one of the pervasive effects of AI. AI will massively erode the premium charged by senior professionals in any white collar role. You might still need the 0.1% of talent to build world-scale systems. But the top 1-10% are going to see massive competition from the middle 50% as AI uplevels the latter group's skills.

Venture is a crazy job in that one single great decision can make an entire career: if you meet the next Mark Zuckerberg, write him a check on the spot, and do nothing else ever again, you will still end up as one of the best VCs ever. Everything we do in between is about maximizing our chances of that happening

As you head into (wrapping up) 2024 strategic planning, remember the old adage (attributed to Bezos): "what we do in our business this year will drive our results three years down the line." Every action, initiative and investment in 2024 will ripple through to 2026. Sow seeds in 2024 that you can harvest in 2026 and beyond.

The greatest lesson I took from Munger is not about investing but about resilience. He lost his 9 year old son to cancer. He lost his eye. He lost most of his money in a divorce. His fund had 50%+ drawdowns, and yet every day, he got up over and over again to keep compounding.

C Players: "This is broken. Someone should fix it." B Players: "This is broken. Do you want me to start working on fixing it?" A Players: "This broke. I fixed it, recruited someone to be responsible for it, and created a process for others to more easily fix it in the future."
Kevin → Plant Daddy@KevinEspiritu

Everyone talks about hiring A players, here's what one looks like: Our Head of Search (responsible for all written content in the @epicgardening universe) came to me recently and said: "I'm spending 20 hours a week managing editor tasks and responsibilities, which likely cost our company $x/mo. I'd prefer to focus on e-commerce SEO, especially since it takes some time to ramp up and it's 6 months before our busy season in spring. There's a lot of low hanging fruit we need to fix before then, and it'd have a meaningful impact on revenue. If I do this, I need someone to replace my hours, and I've chosen "Jane" from our pool of freelance writers. She's talented, hungry, and already knows a lot of our systems. We can bump her up and bring her on full time which is a net cost increase of $x, which will be offset by increased content production of # articles per month, AND I'll be free to focus on higher leverage tasks. Am I clear to make this move?" This isn't the first time he's done this, either. He routinely brings me proposals like this that are well thought out, clearly display his understanding of how his department fits into the larger business goals, and how he can best leverage his skills.
