@TruthDoctor77 @AnnelieseDodds Tell that to the government, who are spaffing away billions on net zero & illegal immigrants. It often costs more to means test than to just pay the benefit. BTW, state pension is taxable unlike many other benefits

From April, the Government is putting more money in your pocket to help with the cost of living 💷 Here’s what’s changing: ⚡ Around £150 off energy bills (7% drop) – applied automatically 💷 4% Pay rise for 2.7 million workers – up to £900-£1500 a year more

@LinWells81 @AnnelieseDodds Then means test it and make it stringent. Stop millionaires getting a benefit they don't need. Very easy to spend spend spend when it's someone else's money.

@TruthDoctor77 @AnnelieseDodds I don't think you really understand that for older pensioners, schemes were not available, certainly for women. Perhaps find out about people's life experiences before picking on a vulnerable group

@LinWells81 @AnnelieseDodds They may have worked but they haven't saved adequately. The two are not mutually inclusive. Relying on just the state pension for your retirement planning is ridiculous.

@TruthDoctor77 @AnnelieseDodds Lots of people on benefits are doing the same. Massive amounts of money being spent on people who have never paid a penny into the system.Think you'll find the majority of pensioners have actually worked!

@Phat_Zorst @PensionsMonkey You just wish that was the case. Make the state pension means tested then, cut the triple lock. I dont care. We as an aging nation need to spend less on the pension bill. Simple as.

Left unchecked, the Triple Lock will consume the entire known universe, it is an unsustainable transfer of wealth from people in work to the retired. It has to stop. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@LinWells81 @AnnelieseDodds It doesn't matter whether I could or couldn't. I think the onus is on me to provide in my retirement not the state. I'm paying 1600 a month into my pension while people who are going to rely on the state pension in a few years are out buying the latest I phone 🤷🏻‍♂️

@notanerable @MiloStynes @PolitlcsUK Which means that 2/3rds ARE NOT MILLIONAIRES & that is the majority of OAPS, some like me who worked FIFTY YEARS paying tax & NI all to be vilified for having a state pension at the end of it which is a hell of a lot less than the minimum wage at that !

You are incorrect. YOU are expected to pay “voluntary” contributions and these are taken from your pay/credits before you receive any monies. To receive the full new State Pension (currently £230.25 a week for 2025/26), you typically need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance (NI) contributions or credits. A minimum of 10 years is required for any payment. Contributions are made through employment, self-employment, or credits.

No one has ‘paid into’ the state pension. NI payments are spent by the government of the day, not put into a pot with your name on. Using these terms just perpetuates the myth that the state pension is a contributory scheme. It isn’t. It’s a non-means tested universal benefit paid for by current taxpayers.

Why do people hate the elderly so much? So tired of listening to the left and some on the right, demonising pensioners for daring to draw a pension, mainly after 40-50 years of hard graft and tax paying. The same people don't want to discuss or demonise in the same way the 1 million 18-24 year olds not working/paying tax and only taking from the state. Or the ballooning benefits bill for those who decide that their ailment means that they can just take from the state regardless of contribution. Benefits should be an acute lifeline or safety net for the very small percentage of us who cannot work or need help to get back to work; not a lifetime activity for those who could but don't work. Leave the elderly alone; £12,500 a year is hardly a bounty and they earned it.

Your taxes (including NI) didnt pay into a state pension they paid for day to day spending, you have no automatic right to one The current non-means tested triple lock pension is both unaffordable and immoral. Time to get a grip.

For those that appear to begrudge pensioners their state pension just remember that the majority of these people worked from the age of 16yrs until retirement paying their taxes. Compare that to today when there are millions on benefits not paying any taxes but will still receive a state pension. Also the state pension is well below the living wage & yet a lot of pensioners are expected to get by with no additional help unlike people on benefits.

@DeBarsham 25% of pensioners are millionaires. Many are not living on the state pension. The state pension is a nice top-up that they spend on an extra holiday lol.

@PensionsMonkey Let's hear you say that when you're eligible to draw your state pension. If there even is such when you get to that age. Try living off £900 a month and having to pay tax on it as well.

@miriam_cates Our pensioners have grafted all their lives and paid into their state pension, YES they are entitled to it and it’s the Government’s responsibility to ensure they get it! Unlike many who’ve rocked up here and never paid a penny into the pot yet get it all for free
