@mcewan_janiel I put it to you, it was a bad choice when Jamaica decided against new oil hedging arrangements in Sept. 2020. The BOJ due to economic constraints during covid, thought it unwise to pursue future hedging as previous were costly & failed to secure adequate returns on investment.

Thread: 🚨🚨🚨Oil at $100 While Jamaica Planned for $60, Let’s Talk About What That Means. 1/11 Hey Jamaica, oil has jumped from around US$60 a barrel late last year to nearly US$100 right now. Our 2026/27 budget was built on exactly US$60. So what does that actually mean for your light bill, gas tank, groceries, and the government’s plans? Let’s break it down.

@jaevionn Almost 20 years since its passage. Jamaica no problem. Then we talk about inefficiency in the public service.

In 2007, Jamaica enacted the Electronic Transactions Act. The bill was piloted by Phillip Paulwell and there was bipartisan support. An Electronic Transactions Policy was launched this week to guide the implementation of the Act.

@JohnPolack4 Love your response. And finally you and i agree on something fundamental. Everything doesn't have to be political. Andrew have his children to raise and by all account has done well in that department. Others should do same

This is what brogadism has done to our children. When they hear of someone using money from their charity for personal gains this is the result. I do hope they are disciplined for their behavior.

Damien: JPS is a pvt firm. I'd love to get a 5% loan from Govt, which in real terms is free Fayval: JPS is regulated. What do u think would happen if we charged them a higher rate? They'd pass it on to customers Damien: True. It ultimately would get passed on to customers

@TruthLawOrder Not sure if there will be a negative net impact on the budget tbh since volumes will most likely increase if we decrease the duty (we saw increase in import volumes after increasing the threshold)

The fact that people are willing to incur 2 tax charges from the online seller, 2 GCT charges from the bank, 2 shipping and handlings fees from the couriers to avoid paying the duty should be indicative to the fact that the duty is excessive no?
Jamaica Gleaner@JamaicaGleaner

Finance Minister Fayval Williams has raised concerns about “order splitting”, a practice in which shoppers divide large online purchases into smaller packages to remain under the US$100 duty-free threshold. Read more: jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/2… #GLNRToday

It's giving "we don't have a plan and we're manking it up as we go along." There is nothing in the law that says I am required to spend over US$100 for every online transaction. It's like being upset when people don't commit a traffic offense because a ticket can't be issued.

@KingstonLoyal @Mello_Mel27 Let me help you: Click below Google.com Enter the words below Collective Responsibility READ what it means. It was a cabinet decision, which means, it was also Fayval decision. Why is it too much? Why should I pay 3 times what retailers pay for an item?

@TruthLawOrder @Mello_Mel27 How the fuck you go split a package that cost 50 dollars bro? Which is the point I making. Are you dumb or what? Or are you a fucking parrot? She is saying the increase to 100 was too much. DUH!!!

@TruthLawOrder @Mello_Mel27 Are being obtuse? or is it that even I am unclear? Most items that used to cost below 50 back in covid, now costs more than 50. If it cost more than 50 per item now, how you split that? I think this is the major point. It is not about the legality of split, its the amount.

A company owned by a member of parliament imported JMD millions of Products through A government subsidiary bypassing restrictions. I have not heard a peep out of anyone. Why is the minister gaslighting me that by legally splitting packages we are robbing the government ?

@KingstonLoyal @Mello_Mel27 There is nothing in Law that prohibits someone from splitting an order to benefit from not incurring taxes. She could have completed her presentation without adding that one paragraph.

@Mello_Mel27 I don’t think she communicated properly, but I know for me personally, especially since free covid, prices gone up and most things I buy are above 50 us. If the rate was still at 50, I’d be paying taxes on those.
