@indologia High praise indeed. It’s interesting that a sizeable section of those same Goan Saraswat Brahmins have now become non-vegetarian… we even heard a Sardesai proudly declare his love for beef steak.

This is what Portugese Administrator Tomé Pires wrote about the Goans of 16th century. There are a great many heathens in this kingdom of Goa, more than in the kingdom of the Deccan. Some are very honoured men with large fortunes & almost the whole kingdom lies in their hands, because they are natives, possess the land & pay the taxes. Some are noblemen with many followers & lands of their own & are persons of great repute & wealthy & live on their estates. They have beautiful temples of their own in this kingdom. They have Brahmans of many kinds. There are some very honoured stock among these Brahmans. Some of them will not eat anything which has contained blood or anything prepared by the hand of another. These Brahmans are greatly revered throughout the country, particularly among the heathen. They are clever, prudent, learned in their religion. A Brahman would not become a Mohammedan even if he were made a king. Source: The Suma Oriental of Tome Pires

@gr_kini @Biorahul @indologia Mr.Kini indeed it’s non other than your ancestors . The only Brahmins(Bamons) of Goa in salsette, bardesh and other areas were Saraswat Brahmins.Local population called only Saraswat Brahmins as Bamon(Doing Vedic rituals) and shanavapati(Administrator).

@Liraaswa @krishpera @indologia No the sahasasti and bardesh settlements were strict vegetarians and the same people were visited by Madhwacharya during 13th century to propagated Madhwa sampradaya. The same people migrated to coastal Karnataka and Cochin.Till date they are strict vegetarians.Bhat,Pandit etc

2 points here.. * We South indians should never ask anyone to learn our language. Respect their individual rights * Be bold enough to say I'm a Malayali, Tamilian, Kannadiga, Telugu first. That's my identity. Indian is a citizenship and we are not Pseudo Nationalist

@WeDravidians I can confirm this. (I'm GSB by birth, over which I had no control. I am a staunch follower of Dr Ambedkar by choice.) Fish is the GSB community's staple diet. But almost all of us eat chicken, mutton, pork, etc. very regularly.

Another "Strong Notice" in Kannada issued to the watchman of an apartment tower, who doesn’t understand Kannada. The fight against English is going strong. They are unstoppable 🔥
Kiran Aradhya@KiranAradhyaadv

Deadly fight against English continues… A shop dared to put 60% English on its name board, so a “strong notice” was issued to the watchman of that store, along with a terrifying one-week deadline to fix it. Flower ❌ Fire ✅

@GuNaateeta GSB are indeed satkarma Brahmins,Sasasti and bardesh were main settlement of Vedic culture. When Portuguese destroyed all the temples few of them joined trading, till date in mangalore and partagali traditional vedapatashala exists.Refer 1630 and 1675 verdicts of Kashi pandits.

@Durga_Dasa Saraswatas from Goa only had rights to 3 karmas, out of 6 karmas prescribed for Brahmanas, due to fish consumption. We are a heterogenous lot with varied mentalities. At the best, we are Vaishyas in temperament. Very few true Brahmins left here.

@The___brahmans @I_am_Vedvrat Maharashtra data is just selective of few district. There are only 5 type of Brahmins namely Deshastha(40% of Brahmins),chitpavan,Gaud Saraswat, karhade and Devrukhe. In that 3 Brahmins name is missing 😆. I am sure they are atleast 13%.

The Brahmans ब्राह्मण
@I_am_Vedvrat It's close enough! Brahmans were second largest in rajasthan, United province (up, uttrakhand) , Bihar and Orissa in 1931. In the Bombay presidency they too were in good numbers .

@The___brahmans I don’t think in karanataka it is just 2%! There is problem in analysing data-Brahmins in south karanataka just mention themself as Brahmins. In costal Karnataka they add caste name Ex:Havkyaka,Gaud Saraswat,Stanika,Madhwa,Shivalli,Hoysala Karnataka suffixed as Brahmins.(1/2)

@The___brahmans In north Karnataka they introduce themself as Deshastha,Madhwa,Rayaramatha suffixed by Brahmins. So in census they consider only the people mention just as Brahmins.Verify the list you will find all other caste in that list. Ex:Havyaka+Gaud Saraswat =4 MLA ,1 MP.Verify
