@greg_ashman Recorded audio feedback can be a really useful method for giving high quality feedback that is delayed and less onerous on workload. It works really well for subjects that require more time to understand work, like English and students love it!

Marking This is the biggest waste of time in education. It takes *hours*. There is no evidence that taking up science or history exercise books every couple of weeks, ticking and flicking, writing a couple of things in the margin and two or three points at the end does anything at all. Neither is there much evidence for this approach to marking essays. And yet, so many schools seem invested in it to the point that leaders spend much of their time policing it. I think the practice stems from two sources. The first is confusing marking with feedback. Feedback can be in the moment. It can be a teacher’s response to what’s on a mini whiteboard. In fact, that’s going to have a bigger impact than marking because it is more likely to be received and acted on, whereas comments in books can be ignored. And that’s not an excuse to make the situation worse by insisting that kids have to respond to the comments and then teachers have to respond to that—which is madness. The second source is tradition and a fear of parents who expect the marking. But imagine a football coach who asks their inexperience players to play a game of football. It’s full of mistakes and even misunderstandings of the rules but the coach says nothing. Then, at the end, the coach writes each player a short note on how to improve for next time that the players may not even read. That’s marking.
