Kerala’s Conscience Cannot Be Rewritten In the quiet hills of Wayanad, tragedy recently tested not just our infrastructure, but our humanity. When landslides struck Chooralmala and Mundakkai, homes were buried, lives were lost, and entire families were torn apart. In those harrowing hours, however, something profound emerged from the rubble — Kerala’s enduring commitment to unity beyond religion, caste, or creed. The rescue efforts were not led by identity; they were led by compassion. Hindu, Muslim, and Christian volunteers worked shoulder to shoulder, pulling survivors from debris and offering dignity to the departed. The deceased were laid to rest together, and prayers were offered collectively — not as separate communities, but as one grieving society. That moment reflected the true spirit of Kerala: humane, inclusive, and resolutely secular. It is against this lived reality that certain attempts to portray Kerala through a divisive lens must be examined. A proposed cinematic project titled The Kerala Story 2 has generated concern for allegedly perpetuating stereotypes and deepening communal fault lines. Artistic freedom is a cornerstone of democracy. However, freedom carries responsibility. When creative expression drifts into deliberate misrepresentation or caricature of a society’s plural fabric, it risks eroding the very harmony that sustains democratic life. Kerala’s social history is not without debate or dissent. But its defining strength has been coexistence. Our festivals are shared, our public spaces inclusive, and our political discourse — though vibrant and often contentious — anchored in constitutional values. Attempts to reduce such a complex and progressive society into a monolithic or extremist narrative do disservice not only to Kerala, but to the idea of India itself. Cinema, as a powerful medium, shapes perception. In a diverse country, perception can influence social trust. When narratives selectively amplify division while ignoring lived solidarity such as what we witnessed in Wayanad’s darkest hours, they risk manufacturing suspicion where none naturally exists. The people of Kerala do not seek immunity from critique. We welcome dialogue, debate, and even artistic interrogation. But we firmly reject portrayals that weaponise culture, food habits, or faith identities to stigmatise an entire population. Such framing undermines national integration rather than strengthening it. The tragedy in Wayanad reminded us that beyond politics, beyond ideology, lies a shared human core. That is the Kerala story we know. It is a story written not in scripts, but in acts of courage and compassion. In defending Kerala’s plural ethos, we are not merely defending a state; we are upholding the constitutional promise of equality, fraternity, and secularism.
