Article’s out! Memoirs and travelogues as genres should be revived, so as my own contribution, I wanted to write on my recent travels and my discovery of «home»—here’s the outcome. LMK what y’all think. traversingtradition.com/2025/10/22/str…

Part of the beauty of traveling to another country is that I don’t have to drive. I love driving across scenic routes, but for the most part cars are a cancer whose invention has set us back—there’s nothing civilized about them. Trains are a hallmark of true development.

@TJcban Yeah it’s one of the reasons I love visiting there especially. A well-developed public transportation system is necessary in any decent city.

@Covenant_watch I wonder how someone looks at Cairo and goes “the city needs more people.”

@ciscaucasian My cousin and I built shelves all around the study stretching up to the ceiling for accommodating these books and there’s only one small shelf that has some space (will fill up with 3-4 medium-sized hauls). Maybe I do need to stop Sieda.

@jack71574535 @Covenant_watch These were all under the “Occult Sciences,” a part of which were alchemical works. These were all intertwined so you’d see connections between those and numerology and astrology and so on, each with its own purpose.

@Tsunalyst @Covenant_watch Im guessing this was all under the name of alchemical works ? I know at least in the more eastern islamic lands there's seems to have been some kind of buddhist interaction in the early periods.

Yeah they’d vary depending on the location and the period. There are similarities in the way the Occult Sciences were conducted but they retained their cultural influences still. Arab Islamicate Occultism had many Greek influences, for example, whilst in al-Andalus you’d find Jewish influences in numerology due to the somewhat syncretic setting.

There are assumptions that are intertwined with the larger frameworks of those positing these ideas. One can see the assumptions and the frameworks, but as for arriving at them from first principles or seeing how all this logically works, that’ll be a tough endeavor so you end up working with their assumptions anyway.

@Covenant_watch Intresting. What was the logic behind this then ? The jinn listening in on heavenly secrets is simple enough to understand. Are these other methods supposing some kind of intermediary alam-mithal type realm ?

Does anyone know of any other good historical travel journals like Ibn Battuta or Evliya Çelebi?

Goethe’s words for a blessed Friday: “Everyone to whom you give yourself, you will come to love as yourself. Give your penny happily, don’t pile up a legacy of gold, make haste joyously to prefer the present to its memory.”
