@Aussenseitter Longswamp(the nickname for Longchamp racecourse) is much softer than japanese turf, not to mention when it rains, it pretty much turns into a bog. So it's probably closer to a JRA dirt track.

@DRFHersh @ChurchillDowns Something is changing. There seems to be more of a willingness to take on the best in the division instead of avoiding each other. I don't want to get crazy, but that's a terrific race if they all go. It's not 70s or even early 80s great, but it's damn good.

@Equibase Much needed, US racing websites have been drastically in need of a facelift. Felt like generally Japanese websites had better presentation while delivering information more effectively

@kylegoon It was an absurdly expensive experience and I say goodbye forever to the Stronach group that helped run the Maryland racing industry into the ground. I still went because Laurel is my track but the state has got it's work cut out for it if it wants to right this sinking ship

A Preakness with fewer than 5,000 spectators was a hollow experience, to say the least. What if (and please, bear with me here) horse racing pushed *affordability* over exclusivity? Why a dying industry should open up its velvet ropes to save itself: thebanner.com/opinion/column…

I was optimistic until I heard @GovWesMoore speak yesterday. Sounded pretty clear he’d rather send millions and millions in perpetuity to CDI and own NOTHING instead of the state simply buying the Preakness rights and owning an asset that can appreciate or be sold for more later. Always easier for a politician to pretend they have a “win” by passing all the problems to the next governor. Hope you can talk business sense into him @TKKuegler
Chris Brown@browch05

Figured they had to at least try to match. This would be a huge vote of confidence from Maryland to horsemen. Paying CDI escalating fees year after year in exchange for nothing just to lease the Preakness rights would be incredibly dumb if they believe in the industry.

The Baltimore Sun@baltimoresun

Maryland is quietly pursuing an $85M deal to secure Preakness rights, countering Churchill Downs and tying the race to the state long-term. bit.ly/4feBf0g

‡ The Racing Industry and the Broader Economy Notice any similarities between the embedded list and the one below? Might there be any important correlations? – Yearling sales recording all-time highs – foal crop down ~55% (inflation-adjusted since 2005) – wagering handle down ~54% (inflation-adjusted since 2005) – over 40 racetracks closed since 2000, including several major venues – “middle-class” trainers with between 85-100 starts/yr down ~60% since 2005 – “middle-class” trainers with between 85-200 starts/yr down ~40% since 2005

@browch05 Serious question Chris, what could a normal fan like me do to try and help keep racing in Maryland going besides continuing to go to the track and betting. Normally I wouldn't go this far out of my way but I'm prepared to write to my congress people if need be

@i_horseracing @LauraKingsays Making it more accommodating to other contenders would actually make it harder I feel. The Preakness is basically a free win for a Derby winner nowadays if they're able to do the distance and turnaround because none of the other derby runners show up anymore

@LauraKingsays I think there has to be a balance here. 1. It's supposed to be hard. 2. Therefore, we can't throw our toys out the pram when not every horse takes it on. We can change it to encourage more contenders. Or keep it hard and accept that it isn't for everyone.
