@RyanCryle Never a penalty. He needs to have deliberately moved towards the ball. No, Trusty's jump pushes his hand there. Or secondly, he needs to have made made his body unnaturally bigger. Also no. Trusty jump and his hand is where his forehead is. No pen. Now way. Shambles.

I’d quite like Hearts to win the league, but, on reflection, I think it’s a penalty under the rules and once the referee’s attention has been drawn to it by VAR. Unlikely a VAR intervention, and wouldn’t have been given if it was a Motherwell claim in the Celtic box, I fear.

People also seem to be missing the key contextual thing in all this. It does hit his hand, but his arm is only there because of the challenge by Trusty. It's his momentum that pushes it over. It's pinned there because Trustys shoulder is underneath it. He can't retract it.

My take: the ball hitting a hand is not always a handball offence. You have to either 1.) deliberately touch the ball with your hand, or 2.) ball hits your hand/arm when it's made your body unnaturally bigger. This isn't deliberate, and if the ball hits his hand - which is on his forehead in the middle of a normal footballing challenge - he hasn't made his body unnaturally bigger. Because the ball would have hit his head anyway, so his hand on his head does not make his body unnaturally bigger. Furthermore, VAR can only recommend an on-field review for a clear and obvious error. There is only one camera angle available, which does not show that the referee has missed a clear and obvious error. We can't see clearly where the ball hits. This is categorically not what VAR was brought in for, and it all needs ripped up in the summer. This is a really poor look for Scottish football, as you can see from the international condemnation online since the game. You really have to feel for Hearts. Unless you're a Celtic fan of course, that must have been class. But if you're not a Celtic fan. Deary me. Could be a generation defining decision, never mind season defining!

The decision to give the Celtic penalty for handball is one of the worst - and potentially most consequential - VAR decisions you will ever see. Bin it off and make them give a full explanation for what motivated that intervention.

I don’t want Hearts to win the league i think that’s pretty clear but even i have sympathy for them tonight. Genuinely that last minute pen for Celtic is poor and if i’m a Hearts fan,player or coach (or Motherwell for that matter) I’m fuming at that. You have to be 💯 sure with that big a call.

Motherwell boss JBA: I thought I’d seen it all but clearly not. It’s shocking and it’s a shame for the game. The referees see something nobody else sees so I think it’s best I don’t communicate with them for now.
