You work at Deloitte so you don’t have to worry about losing your job to a foreigner willing to take a 50% pay-cut. This is something the waiter at your favourite restaurant has to deal with. This is what the construction worker next to your office park has to deal with. The car guard outside “Pantry” has to deal with this. It’s not a coincidence that many of these jobs are taken by foreigners.
You live in a gated community with 24-hour surveillance so you can sleep peacefully at night. You don’t live in central Joburg next to buildings hijacked by foreigners that house drug dealers/users and criminals.
You buy your fresh food at Woolies so you rarely have to worry about your food being spoiled. Your child isn’t sick because they bought repackaged rotten food at the Somalian spaza shop down the road.
This is why I’ve been enjoying the content from the digital nomads infiltrating Cape Town. You didn’t see an issue when poor people were complaining about the effects of mass-immigration. But now that your favourite coffee spot is charging you R70 for a latte and your rent has almost doubled—now the “government has to do something” 😂
That’s why it’s very important for you to shut TF up if you come from a place of privilege.

no importa en el lugar mas bajo que estes, no importa si tocaste fondo, siempre habrá una salida, una forma de crecer, hasta la muerte, toda derrota es temporal

One of the lessons I learnt very early is to always show up for your friends. Always say your yes-es to them.
Their events, their shows, their invitations to hangout.
Cause apart from the fact that adulthood can fling you halfway across the country (or globe), life is also temporary.
And so are phases of life. They might never need your presence that same way again. It might never carry the same weight.
so? call your friends, drink with them, dance with them, do your sleepovers, and plot your global takeovers.
This version of them will never exist again.

My mom came over, cleaned my kitchen, living room, and bathroom. Did my dishes that were piled up in my sink. Did probably a months worth of laundry. Folded it all. Made me crab dip for lunch. Made me a pot roast and mashed potatoes for dinner. Laid in bed with me while I cried and stroked my hair. Brought a spend the night bag so she could sleep over.
Today is her wedding anniversary. I said “isn’t today your anniversary? Don’t you want to be doing something?” And she said “yes. Spend time with you.”
I was so ashamed I let myself and my life get this bad. I was so embarrassed everything around me, including me, was a mess. I cried and told her how ashamed I was that I couldn’t figure out how to function and I was so embarrassed she had to see me, and my apartment like this. And she just smiled and kissed me on the head and said “I will always do anything for you.” Didn’t make me feel gross. Or lazy. Or like a charity case. She saw her baby who needed help. An almost 30 year old woman was just her baby who needed taken care of once again.
To be loved like that can make even the worst days of your life feel less heavy. Mothers are the most beautiful creatures on the planet. I went from crying because of all of the above, to crying that someone loves me that much. Nothing will ever compare.

You can’t compete with a bond between 2 people who have a child together. Just find yourself a childless person and start from zero

Carl Jung believed life truly begins at 40, viewing the first four decades as "research"—a preparatory phase focused on building an ego, establishing a career, and meeting societal expectations. The second half of life, starting around 40, is for inward exploration, authenticity, and fulfilling one’s true self (individuation) rather than pursuing external validation.
