I’ve been having the urge to share something that’s been on my mind ever since I left this event. The event featured incredible speakers like Eric Egua, KieKie, KO Baba, Iroghama Ogbeifun, and others. While I may not remember everything each speaker said, there’s one thing Iroghama did that has stayed with me. When she came up to speak, she asked people who had attended previous editions of the event to stand up and share the progress they had made since then. She ended by saying something along the lines of, “Don’t let the next conference meet you the same way you are today.” I’m paraphrasing, of course. I heard those words almost in passing, but I can tell you that from the day of that conference until now, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them. I don’t know how they found their way into my subconscious, but I’m glad they did. I’m already looking forward to the next event, determined to be one of those who will proudly say, “At the 2026 IBGO Youth Conference, I was at this level in my career. Today, this is where I’ve gotten to.” I’m putting this out here so you can all hold me accountable. Hopefully, when the next conference comes around, I’ll have a testimony of growth to share. And if this post encourages even one person to intentionally pursue their own growth before then, it’ll be worth it.

A friend of mine didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife for almost six months. Because his father had DEMENTIA. His dad had been diagnosed the previous year. At first, it was small things. Forgetting where he left his wallet. Repeating the same stories. Calling people by the wrong names. Then one afternoon, he drove to a supermarket he’d been visiting for years and couldn’t remember how to get home. After that, everyone agreed he couldn’t live alone anymore. His two sisters both had young children. His younger brother worked in another state. So he brought his father into his own home. His wife welcomed him without complaining. She helped turn the spare room into a bedroom and did everything she could to make him comfortable. For the first few months, they managed. Then the nights became difficult. His father would wake up convinced he had to leave for work. Sometimes he’d unlock the front door. Once, the police brought him back after finding him wandering around at almost 3 a.m. From that day, someone had to stay close to him every night. His wife was the one who suggested it. “You should sleep in Dad’s room,” she said. “If he wakes up, you’ll hear him immediately.” So he did. One night became a week. A week became months. His wife understood. She never complained. She simply adjusted. Then one Sunday, all his siblings came over for lunch. The conversation turned to their father. Someone suggested hiring a professional caregiver to help during the nights. Before anyone else could speak, his younger brother shook his head. “No.” “We’re family.” “We should be looking after our own father.” His sisters agreed. Then his wife, who had been silent the whole time, quietly asked, “Who’s ‘we’?” The room went silent.
