It’s a classic .30-06 soft point hunting load, which consists of a partial copper jacket over a lead core with an exposed or polymer capped soft lead tip at the nose. The soft tip collapses on contact with tissue or bone, peeling the jacket rearward and letting the core mushroom out to about two to three times its original diameter within the first 6-12 inches. It dumps most of its energy very fast, carving a huge permanent cavity and often fragmenting… which is exactly why there were deformed .30 caliber jacket fragments and four lead fragments recovered from Charlie’s neck during the autopsy.
